Szoboszlai's Road to Recovery: When Liverpool's Midfield Maestro Could Roar Back

LONDON — Dominik Szoboszlai's comeback to Liverpool's starting lineup lasted only 32 minutes before he was forced off with an injury against Brentford.

The energetic Hungarian midfielder had sat out Liverpool's previous two matches with a hamstring problem, not even making the trip to Austria for the midweek Champions League victory over LASK.

Andoni Iraola had doubts about Szoboszlai's fitness ahead of Saturday's visit to Brentford but was persuaded by Thursday and Friday's training sessions to field his preferred midfielder alongside Alexis Mac Allister. That call proved to be a costly mistake.

Szoboszlai collapsed to the ground around the half-hour mark of the Premier League encounter in west London, with no involvement from any other player. Liverpool's medical team made their way from the dugout to the near side of the halfway line, but the player had already made his decision. With a dejected shake of his head, Szoboszlai limped off the pitch and headed down the tunnel.

Liverpool were already short-handed in midfield due to Ryan Gravenberch's suspension and quickly conceded a soft header to fall behind at halftime.

What Injury Does Dominik Szoboszlai Have?

At this early point, it remains unclear exactly what went wrong for Szoboszlai. Given that there was no contact involved—the midfielder had actually been operating in a more disciplined, deeper position during a solid half-hour of play—the concern is that this may be a recurrence of his recent muscular complaint.

Szoboszlai had fortunately avoided any serious injuries over the past few years. The hamstring trouble that caused him to miss the heavy defeat to Manchester City and the win against LASK was his first fitness issue since February 2024.

At that time, Szoboszlai missed 10 consecutive Liverpool matches with a hamstring problem that had not resurfaced—until now.

When Will Dominik Szoboszlai Be Back for Liverpool?

Only time will provide a clear recovery timeline—and even then, any rehabilitation will be subject to unpredictable circumstances. The fact that Szoboszlai has only just returned from such a recent setback is a significant worry.

Iraola is already dealing with midfield depth issues given Gravenberch's ongoing suspension—though the Dutch international will be available from Monday onwards.

"We need everyone," Iraola urgently cautioned before losing his No. 8, "we will need everyone at one point or another. Everyone has to be ready because we will probably need him."
