With a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals at stake, France face Paraguay without key midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni this Saturday.
Les Bleus, who arrived in North America as one of the tournament's top contenders, cruised into the round of 16. The side delivered a flawless group stage, defeating Senegal, Iraq and Norway to top Group I, before comfortably dispatching Sweden 3–0 in the round of 32.
France now returns to Boston, where Paraguay stands in their way after pulling off an upset against Germany in a penalty shootout. Didier Deschamps's side enters as the clear favorite, having netted 13 goals across their opening four matches.
However, the 2018 world champions will be missing their midfield lynchpin at Gillette Stadium.
Why Tchouaméni Is Not Playing Against Paraguay

Tchouaméni has been ruled out against Paraguay due to a minor thigh problem. Initially reported by RMC Sport and later confirmed by L'Équipe, the midfielder experienced discomfort during Friday's training session and will not be risked in the round of 16.
Tchouaméni had already sat out France's 3–0 victory over Iraq with a comparable issue, though Deschamps downplayed the concern at the time, stating there was "no cause for concern." Yet two weeks on, he finds himself navigating another match without his most important midfielder.
The encouraging news for France is that the injury is only expected to keep Tchouaméni out for roughly four days. Should Les Bleus beat Paraguay as anticipated and advance to the quarterfinals, the Real Madrid star is expected to be fully fit and available.
France would then face Morocco in Boston on July 9, with a World Cup semifinal berth on the line.

How France Can Cope Without Tchouaméni

Tchouaméni's absence is a setback for France, but one the team can manage against a weaker Paraguay side. Manu Koné, who stepped in for Tchouaméni against Iraq, is set to partner Adrien Rabiot once again.

Koné made a strong impression in that outing, earning himself another start in France's 4–1 triumph over Norway. The 25-year-old AS Roma midfielder is composed on the ball, robust defensively and willing to put in the hard yards with his relentless energy.
In a match where Les Bleus are expected to control possession, Koné simply needs to stay focused and fulfill his role, while allowing the attacking talents up front to lead the charge. He may lack Tchouaméni's range of passing, but Michael Olise, Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé possess more than enough quality to make up the difference.
