Ted Lasso Season 4: All the Exciting Details Revealed So Far

You better "BELIEVE" it—Ted Lasso, the beloved comedy series about an infectiously optimistic American football coach navigating the world of soccer—is coming back for Season 4, long after fans assumed the show had wrapped up for good.

The show's final episode aired on May 31, 2023, closing with Ted heading back to America to coach his son's soccer squad, Keeley Jones (Juno Temple) pitching the idea of a women's team to club owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham), and former captain Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) stepping into the role of head coach for the men's side. AFC Richmond finished as runners-up in the league, while the famously silent Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) tied the knot with his girlfriend, Jane.

Every character seemed headed toward a satisfying conclusion ... but that apparently wasn't enough for co-creator and writer Jason Sudeikis, who began reconsidering the show's ending in February 2024. Now, roughly eighteen months after that change of heart, the long-anticipated and once-unthinkable fourth season is set to debut on Apple TV on Aug. 5, with hopes of recapturing the same charm and energy that made it a cultural phenomenon in the first place.

Before the premiere arrives, here's a quick rundown of everything we know about the story and format of S4.

Ted will be coaching a women's team

In Season 4, Lasso has stepped away from the men's game and will instead take charge of a women's team in the Richmond area: the second-division Lady Greyhounds. As noted above, this storyline was hinted at during the Season 3 finale.

"Throughout the course of the season, Ted and the team learn to leap before they look, taking chances they never thought they would," streamer Apple TV stated in a press release announcing the Season 4 premiere date.

Due to this shift in direction, much of the show's original cast will not be returning. Sudeikis, Waddingham, Jeremy Swift (Leslie Higgins), Temple and Goldstein are all confirmed back, but fans likely won't see familiar AFC Richmond faces like Dani Rojas, portrayed by Cristo Fernández, or Sam Obisanya, portrayed by Toheeb Jimoh. Phil Dunster, who played the flashy Jamie Tartt across Seasons 1–3, is confirmed absent from Season 4 due to scheduling conflicts with his part in HBO's Rooster.

Season 4 is believed to be 'considerably stronger' than Season 3

In a Hollywood Reporter feature published July 22, THR's Lacey Rose noted that "the general consensus, internally, is that the fourth season is considerably stronger than the third," which had received the lowest critical ratings of the original three seasons.

Goldstein added, speaking about the new installment: "I think it has some of that Season 1 magic."

Additionally, the episodes in Season 4 are also "significantly shorter" than those of Season 3, according to Rose, where runtimes had been averaging close to an hour each.

Waddingham's character has a love interest

Waddingham, who portrays Richmond owner Rebecca Welton, will be given a romantic storyline in Season 4, as the actress hinted during a recent appearance on The View.

Waddingham kept details close to her chest when pressed on the subject, but she did reveal (with a knowing smile) that her on-screen partner is "not unattractive."

(For what it's worth, the Season 4 teaser trailer does show Rebecca leaning over a table to kiss a man.)

Season 4 will have 10 episodes

In a video interview with The Hollywood Reporter—"Rapid Fire Questions With 'Ted Lasso' Cast"—Sudeikis confirmed that the upcoming season will consist of 10 episodes.

"Ted Lasso is presented with an option to do something different in his life for people that he's never done it for before, and he may or may not accept it, but he does, because we made 10 episodes, and how would you ever turn a 'no' into 10 episodes?" Sudeikis said, responding to a question about his character's S4 arc.
