Ted Lasso's Exciting Role Revealed for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Since its premiere on Apple TV in 2020, the comedy-drama series "Ted Lasso" has won over soccer enthusiasts both longtime and newly converted. Hollywood star Jason Sudeikis, who portrays the show's titular character, Ted — a lovable yet hilariously underqualified English Premier League manager — is set to take a prominent role at the opening of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the U.S., with his presence felt throughout the entire tournament.

Sudeikis will be among the high-profile figures featured in the festivities leading up to the U.S. men's national team's opening clash against Paraguay on Friday at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT at SoFi Stadium, reflecting the considerable influence his character has had in boosting the sport's profile across America.

The actor and comedian, now most recognized for his Apple TV role, will greet fans at the venue as an official World Cup ambassador, kicking off pre-match celebrations that will also include performances by Katy Perry, Future, Anitta, LISA, Rema and Tyla.

Country music duo Dan + Shay will then perform "The Star-Spangled Banner" for the U.S., while Purahéi Soul will deliver the national anthem of Paraguay.

This won't be Sudeikis's first connection with U.S. Soccer, either. Prior to the 2022 World Cup, he penned letters to USMNT players in Lasso's voice, offering motivational guidance before the team's memorable run to the round of 16 in Qatar. Those messages were displayed on billboards throughout the country.

Despite the fourth season of "Ted Lasso" not arriving until after the World Cup concludes, Sudeikis will be a familiar face on television screens through World Cup commercials this summer. For Nike, he appeared alongside celebrities Kim Kardashian, Travis Scott and Channing Tatum, as well as NBA icon LeBron James and soccer legends Erling Haaland and Cristiano Ronaldo, among others.

Meanwhile, for Visa, he reunited with Haaland once more, along with Spain's Lamine Yamal.

Apple TV+ is scheduled to drop the new season of "Ted Lasso" on Aug. 5, just over two weeks after the newest World Cup champion is crowned at MetLife Stadium on July 19.

After guiding fictional Premier League club AFC Richmond through the show's first three seasons, the fourth installment sees Lasso embracing a fresh challenge — managing a second-division women's team — with limited additional plot details made available so far.
