The Bold Reasons Behind Tottenham's Move to Snap Up Free Agent Defender Marcos Senesi

Marcos Senesi is set to join Tottenham Hotspur, having agreed to move to the north London club when his Bournemouth deal expires at the close of the month.

Senesi, a standout performer in Bournemouth's impressive 2025–26 campaign, was regarded as a highly sought-after free agent but has swiftly been snapped up by a club eager to strengthen its squad after consecutive 17th-place Premier League finishes.

The Argentine center back becomes Spurs' second free signing of the summer, following the arrival of former Liverpool left back Andy Robertson.

While Robertson is still awaiting a squad number, Senesi has been allocated the No. 5 shirt. The contract duration has not been officially confirmed but was previously reported as four years, running through to the end of the 2029–30 Premier League season. Currently 29, Senesi will be 33 by the time it concludes.

Why Spurs Wanted Marcos Senesi

Some may have anticipated Senesi reuniting with Andoni Iraola, who has departed Bournemouth for Liverpool, particularly given the shortage of center back cover at Anfield. Chelsea and Manchester United had also been mentioned as potential suitors.

However, the defender was drawn to feeling genuinely desired by Spurs. "Spurs really showed me that they wanted me, why they want me and what they expect from me. I'm happy for that."

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi, whose initial priority was keeping Spurs in the Premier League and who now aims to push the club up the standings, highlighted the "experience, quality on the ball and competitive edge" he anticipates from Senesi, along with added "flexibility in formation."

"He's comfortable playing in a possession-based team, reads the game very well and has the personality to thrive in a demanding environment," De Zerbi added. "I also love his mentality and desire to keep improving and I'm looking forward to working with him and seeing the big contribution he can make to the team."

Senesi himself touched on his strengths in possession: "I like to have the ball at my feet and try to help the team build and be as offensive as we can, try to press as high as possible.

"I've just got that feeling of playing forward all the time. I don't like to play too much to the sides. I just try to break the lines and try to be more offensive."

Senesi missed out on Argentina's final World Cup 2026 roster and will therefore be available to begin preseason with Spurs without disruption in early July.

Spurs' Defensive Recruitment Not Finished?

Micky van de Ven, Jan Paul van Heck

With lingering doubts surrounding Spurs captain Cristian Romero, who drew criticism from supporters in the latter stages of last season over an apparent lack of dedication during a turbulent period, securing a second center back could prove to be a wise move.

Brighton & Hove Albion's Jan Paul van Hecke has emerged as a candidate. Reports from the Netherlands suggest Van Hecke is keen on joining Spurs, placing their interest above that of rival clubs. It also helps that Micky van de Ven is a fellow international and has already spoken with him.

"I did talk to Jan Paul briefly about Tottenham. I think it is a good step for him," Van de Ven confirmed from the Dutch World Cup camp this week.

Van Hecke is also well acquainted with De Zerbi, having broken into Brighton's first team during the Italian's tenure as manager.
