Despite his longstanding connections to Liverpool, Xabi Alonso opted to take the reins at Chelsea ahead of the 2026–27 season, a choice he says ultimately came down to "timings."
The Spanish tactician became a free agent in January following a turbulent spell at Real Madrid that ended in dramatic fashion. Alonso remained without a club through the end of the season before agreeing terms with the Blues to become the permanent replacement for Liam Rosenior.
Many had anticipated the former Liverpool midfielder would eventually make a triumphant homecoming to Merseyside, but Alonso offered a straightforward explanation for his choice. "Well, it is about timings," he told BBC Sport.
The 44-year-old put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge while Arne Slot was still at the helm at Anfield. Liverpool appeared committed to keeping the Dutchman despite a difficult second season in charge, allowing Chelsea to secure Alonso without any rival interest from his former side.
It was only weeks after Alonso had committed to Chelsea that Liverpool made the unexpected move to dismiss Slot. The 20-time English champions swiftly appointed Andoni Iraola as their new manager.
Alonso the Next Man to Try and Survive BlueCo

Alonso chose not to dwell on the obvious undertones of his remarks, instead redirecting attention to Chelsea, where significant work lies ahead following the club's disappointing 2025–26 campaign.
"I am looking forward to this challenge, a big challenge, and Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs and I am looking forward to having success here," he said.
The Blues went from lifting the Club World Cup the previous summer to a 10th-place Premier League finish, missing out on European football entirely. Chelsea had hoped to rescue their season with an FA Cup triumph, but were beaten 1–0 by Manchester City in the final.
That defeat came under caretaker manager Calum McFarlane, who stepped in after Rosenior was relieved of his duties at the end of April. The former Strasbourg boss had lasted fewer than four months in the role despite signing a six-and-a-half-year contract back in January.

Prior to Rosenior, it was Enzo Maresca whose time at Stamford Bridge unraveled following a breakdown in his relationship with the club's ownership.
Alonso now becomes the sixth permanent manager in four years under BlueCo, a role that has proven something of a poisoned chalice in the Premier League. Yet the Spaniard is confident he can achieve what his predecessors could not, while fostering a healthy working relationship with those at the top.
"What I like is that we work together and we are all part of the decisions we take, we all feel responsible for that," Alonso said. "We are confident that we are doing the right things in the right way. The potential is there. I think there is a strong base and a good team already there.
"We need to reinforce it in the right way and take good decisions to do that. The feeling is that we are aligned with the sporting directors. The ultimate goal is to have a good team, build the right squad and we are in that moment."
Alonso Intent to 'Build' Around Cole Palmer

Much of the club's—and Alonso's—fortunes will hinge on unlocking the best from Cole Palmer. The England international failed to replicate the brilliance of his stunning debut Chelsea season, battling inconsistency and injury concerns over the past two years, to the point where Thomas Tuchel left him out of the Three Lions' 2026 World Cup squad.
"So far we have been together for a few days and he has come in with a positive mindset and positive spirit. He wants to enjoy playing football," Alonso said of Palmer.

"He is a special player, a different class with a different quality, and if we help him by building a team around him that allows his talent to shine, we will be closer to success. I am sure of that."
Chelsea have so far brought in a host of promising young talent, including Marco Palestra, Dastan Satpayev, and Geovany Quenda. The club has also managed to retain Enzo Fernández, even as Marc Cucurella departed for Real Madrid and Andrey Santos joined Manchester United.
