In a thrilling Bronze Final that saw England beat France 6–4, Mbappé bolstered his numbers by scoring twice and adding an assist, not only opening up a two-goal advantage in the Golden Boot race with 10 strikes, but also surpassing Messi as the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals.

Messi now requires a hat-trick against Spain in the World Cup final to reach 11 goals and claim outright victory in the Golden Boot race. Matching Mbappé's output with a brace and an assist would also be sufficient, as the two would then be level on goals but Messi would hold the edge with one more assist.

Should Messi score twice without registering an assist, the pair would end level on 10 goals and four assists each. In that scenario, Mbappé would almost certainly take the Golden Boot by virtue of the second tiebreaker: fewest minutes played throughout the tournament.

Mbappé concluded his 2026 World Cup run with 769 minutes played, according to FIFA's player statistics. Messi, who featured in two matches that extended into extra time, enters the final having played 712 minutes. Should Messi play the full duration of the championship match, he would surpass Mbappé's total minute count.
