Marcus Rashford reportedly squandered his Barcelona audition by wasting the "golden opportunity" he was handed to impress against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinals earlier this month.
The Manchester United attacker, who arrived last summer on a season-long loan for the 2025–26 campaign, has made 43 appearances and accumulated 25 goals and assists combined.
But after a promising start to his new adventure—Rashford registered seven La Liga assists in his opening 12 outings in Spain and netted Champions League braces against Newcastle United and Olympiacos in the early stages of the league phase—his output has since declined.
Rashford has also only started 20 of his 37 appearances across La Liga and the Champions League, underscoring his role as predominantly a squad player.
The 28-year-old's goals in April's consecutive La Liga fixtures against Atlético and Espanyol were his first in the competition since late January. He also failed to contribute a single goal or assist across three Champions League knockout matches against Newcastle and Atlético.
The Athletic reports that the latter appears to have been a particular sticking point. With Raphinha sidelined due to a hamstring injury, it is suggested that Rashford failed to seize the opportunity created by the Brazilian's absence.
Hansi Flick made clear in early April what the moment represented: "It's a good chance now for him to show again, but we have other options [to replace Raphinha, too]."
Following a disappointing display from Rashford in the Champions League quarterfinal first leg against Atlético, Flick chose to start Gavi on the left for the second leg. Rashford was reduced to a substitute role and fared no better as Barcelona were knocked out.
Barcelona's appetite for signing Rashford permanently has now "cooled" and there is no intention of activating the existing $35.3 million (€30 million, £26.1 million) purchase option. While personal terms are not believed to be an obstacle, the Catalans are "weighing up other options" for attacking reinforcements. Manchester United are not expected to revise the terms of a permanent deal to make it more attractive from Barcelona's standpoint.
Who Could Replace Rashford at Barcelona?

Should Rashford depart Catalonia at the conclusion of his loan, Barcelona would need to recruit another forward.
Currently, Rashford serves as the primary backup behind Robert Lewandowski, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha. The only other natural frontline option in the squad is 20-year-old Roony Bardghji. Lewandowski, who turns 38 in August and has seen a notable dip in productivity this season, could also depart.
Julián Alvarez and Harry Kane appear to be the most desirable transfer targets. Whether either is attainable is an entirely different matter. Alvarez carries a nine-figure price tag and is likely beyond reach financially, while Kane remains firmly committed to Bayern Munich and has shown no inclination to move on.
Victor Osimhen and Omar Marmoush are cited by The Athletic as alternatives, primarily for a central striking role. Osasuna winger Víctor Muñoz, a former youth product of both Barcelona and Real Madrid, is being considered as a direct replacement for Rashford in a wide forward position.
Man Utd Return an Option for Rashford

Rashford appears to have settled into life at Barcelona, meaning a departure would be difficult. Initially, at least, that would entail a return to Manchester United, where the contract he penned in 2023 still has two years remaining.
It is not inconceivable that Rashford could be reintegrated into the fold at Old Trafford.
At his peak, the England international has been capable of hitting 30 goals per season. He has been the only United forward since Robin van Persie in 2012–13 to reach that benchmark, achieving it in 2022–23.
Rashford's difficulties at United surfaced early in Ruben Amorim's tenure as manager, leading first to a temporary loan at Aston Villa, followed by this season's spell at Barcelona. The landscape back in Manchester has shifted considerably since then, with Amorim gone and the team showing greater consistency and momentum.
Much could hinge on who takes charge next season, with interim manager Michael Carrick the frontrunner to land the role on a permanent basis and already well acquainted with Rashford as both a former teammate and coach. Carrick has managed to elevate the team's performances by adopting a more straightforward approach.
The 44-year-old, whose own future remains unconfirmed, has kept the door ajar: "Whoever's here, I want to work with, and help them improve. At the moment, it's this squad of players. There's obviously players on loan, and whatever happens with that later on will happen."
