The answer appeared straightforward for a Barcelona side desperately in need of a center back.
They had just watched their exceptionally talented young defender, Pau Cubarsí, dazzle alongside Aymeric Laporte as Spain claimed World Cup glory. Cubarsí was awarded Young Player of the Tournament for his flawless series of performances across North America, including an impressive display in a tightly contested final against Argentina.
"We've both felt very comfortable," Cubarsí said of his partnership with Laporte ahead of the final. "We help each other, we instill confidence in one another, and we make ourselves strong so that we concede as few goals as possible. We're doing well."
Spain let in just one goal on their march to the title, with a composed defensive partnership proving central to their triumph.
When early reports surfaced linking Laporte to Barcelona, it appeared to be a done deal. The player was keen, and Barça would simply need to trigger a modest release clause. Yet the reigning back-to-back La Liga champions have reportedly decided against pursuing the 32-year-old.
Hansi Flick Reportedly Happy With Barcelona's Defense
Barcelona did not bring in a replacement for Iñigo Martínez last summer, with Hansi Flick rotating through several options alongside Cubarsí throughout 2025–26. Eric García, Ronald Araújo, and Gerard Martín all stepped in at various points, with Martín proving the most effective, having initially established himself as a left back at senior level.
Nevertheless, a large portion of the fanbase believes the club must add a center back this summer.
Flick, however, is not overly concerned. According to Mundo Deportivo, the German coach is satisfied with his defensive resources and is optimistic that Andreas Christensen can take on a bigger role at the club next season.
Furthermore, earlier claims suggesting Laporte has a release clause are reportedly inaccurate. Barcelona would instead need to enter direct negotiations with Athletic Club, who brought the defender back home last year and are unlikely to part with the 32-year-old without a fight.
The relationship between the two clubs remains strained following the drawn-out Nico Williams transfer sagas of both 2024 and 2025.
Jules Koundé Could Have New Barcelona Role Next Season
Jules Koundé arrived at Barcelona in 2022 following a standout spell at the core of Sevilla's backline. Despite that, the Frenchman has spent most of his time in Catalonia operating as a right back, growing increasingly comfortable in the attacking fullback role.
Koundé no longer carries the look of a makeshift center back. Flick encourages him to contribute going forward, linking up with Lamine Yamal, and he registered seven goal contributions across La Liga and the Champions League last campaign.

However, Mundo Deportivo reports the French international could finally be deployed in his natural position. Should Araújo leave the club, Koundé would likely serve as Cubarsí's primary partner while continuing to be available as a right back option.
Martín may well remain Flick's first choice alongside Cubarsí, with Barcelona appearing reluctant to bring in another defensive signing. The club still has a pressing need for at least one more attacking reinforcement despite landing Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, and may be holding funds in reserve for a marquee move.
