The Real Reason Chelsea Dropped Two New Signings From Their Preseason Tour

Chelsea have touched down in Australia to kick off their preseason tour, though two new recruits — Emmanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda — were not part of the traveling party.

Emegha's transfer from Strasbourg was officially announced back in September 2025, and the forward is said to have made a promising impression under new head coach Xabi Alonso, netting in closed-door practice matches.

Quenda, on the other hand, had his £40 million ($53 million) move from Sporting CP agreed as early as March 2025. The 19-year-old's deal was struck at the same time as that of fellow midfielder Dário Essugo, who completed his transfer the previous summer instead.

Unfortunately for both players, Emegha and Quenda have been ruled out of Chelsea's touring squad after sustaining minor knocks.

According to Simon Johnson, Quenda's absence is expected to be short-lived, with the versatile wide player set to join the squad for the second portion of Chelsea's tour in Asia. Emegha, however, faces roughly three weeks out and is unlikely to return before the team heads back home.

Why Is Morgan Rogers Not in Chelsea's Preseason Squad?

Morgan Rogers

Emegha and Quenda are not the only new additions missing from the squad, as club-record signing Morgan Rogers is also absent.

There is no cause for alarm regarding Rogers's non-appearance, however. The England international is simply enjoying a well-earned rest following the Three Lions' run at this summer's World Cup, with FIFA regulations requiring players to take a minimum of three weeks off.

With England involved in action through to the third-place playoff on July 18, Rogers is not expected to set foot at Chelsea's training ground until the beginning of August.

The Blues have a pre-season friendly against AC Milan on Aug. 8, which looks likely to arrive too early for Rogers. His first potential appearance could come in Chelsea's final warm-up fixture of the summer against Real Sociedad, scheduled a week later.

The New Faces Looking to Impress

Marco Palestra

Despite the absence of several new signings this summer, Chelsea supporters will still have the opportunity to see some fresh talent in action.

Right back Marco Palestra has made the trip, as has teenage striker Dastan Satpeyev, who won't even turn 18 until Aug. 12. Both players will be eager to catch Alonso's eye while key figures remain sidelined.

The appointment of a new manager effectively signals a clean slate for everyone in the squad, and a number of younger players will be hoping to make the 2026–27 season their breakthrough campaign.

Winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen and the midfield trio of Madhi Nicoll-Jazuli, Reggie Walsh and Reggie Watson all carry strong reputations from youth football — Walsh having already made four senior appearances — while defenders Calvin Diakite and Tayo Subuloye are also highly regarded.

Reports from the behind-closed-doors friendlies indicate that left back Landon Emenalo, the 18-year-old son of former director Michael, has made a particularly strong start under Alonso, seizing the opportunity created by Marc Cucurella's departure to Real Madrid earlier this summer.
