The Real Reason Cristiano Ronaldo Shockingly Walked Away From Real Madrid in 2018

Cristiano Ronaldo's chapter at Real Madrid has become the stuff of footballing folklore.

Widely considered the greatest player to ever don the club's white jersey, the Portuguese superstar spent nine extraordinary seasons with Los Blancos following his record-breaking $105 million move from Manchester United in 2009. Throughout his tenure at the Santiago Bernabéu, Ronaldo conquered everything—both on a personal and collective level.

He netted a club-record 450 goals and delivered 44 hat tricks, claiming four UEFA Champions League titles, two La Liga championships and four Ballon d'Or awards (building on the one he had previously won at United). His imprint on Real Madrid remains without equal.

Yet his stint at the club concluded on a somewhat sour note in 2018.

Despite being instrumental in securing yet another Champions League crown that season, Ronaldo was subsequently sold to Juventus for $117 million in a jaw-dropping transfer that left supporters bewildered and questioning why the club would let go of its biggest icon while he was still at the peak of his abilities.

So, why exactly did Cristiano Ronaldo walk away from Real Madrid?

Ronaldo was candid about his reasons for departing Real Madrid in favor of Juventus.

Shortly after the transfer was completed, he sat down for an interview with France Football, shedding light on why he chose to trade the Spanish capital for Turin.

"I sensed it within the club, particularly from the president, that they no longer valued me the same way they had at the beginning," he said. "In those first four or five years, I genuinely felt like 'Cristiano Ronaldo.' Less so as time went on. The president looked at me differently, as though I was no longer seen as essential to them."

"That's what planted the seed of leaving in my mind. Sometimes I'd come across reports saying I was pushing for an exit. There was some truth to that, but honestly, I always had the sense that the president wouldn't stand in my way," he added.

On his decision to join Juventus in particular, Ronaldo explained: "If it had purely been about money, I would have gone to China, where I could have earned five times what I made here [at Juventus] or at Real. I didn't come to Juve for financial reasons. I was earning the same in Madrid, if not more. The difference is that at Juve, they genuinely wanted me. They told me so and made it abundantly clear. They proved it through their actions."
