Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso confirmed that Enzo Fernández has been omitted from the matchday squad for a second consecutive fixture because he "needs" players who are completely "focused," "committed" and "engaged."
Having sat out Thursday evening's comfortable Carabao Cup victory over Luton Town, Fernández once again failed to earn a spot even among the substitutes for Sunday's encounter with Brighton & Hove Albion.
Alonso praised his controversial midfielder as a "top player" but acknowledged that he did not satisfy the requirements of someone the manager feels confident selecting for a competitive match.
"We assess what's best for the team and considering everything, the situation, we need a team that is focused, with everyone involved that's fully committed and engaged with the game," Alonso told Sky Sports ahead of the fixture at Stamford Bridge.

In Fernández's absence — who came off the bench in Chelsea's Premier League opener against Fulham only to be met with relentless jeers at Craven Cottage — Moisés Caicedo was restored to the matchday squad. However, the key midfielder was only fit enough to feature among the substitutes, a position shared by club skipper Reece James.
That left right back Malo Gusto deployed in an unfamiliar central midfield role alongside the gifted yet unpredictable Roméo Lavia.
For the second successive league outing, Chelsea's 'JP Morgan' attacking trio of Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and João Pedro all featured from the start.

Chelsea had hoped to resolve this saga a fortnight ago. The Blues reportedly issued a deadline of Aug. 14 for Manchester City to submit an offer for Fernández, who had long been valued at $162.7 million (£120 million).
City did not respond to Chelsea's ultimatum, yet the prospect of landing Fernández has not entirely faded. Enzo Maresca's side are believed to have reached personal terms with their manager's namesake, while the Blues are bracing for life without the dynamic midfielder by scouting potential alternatives.
Monaco's Lamine Camara has emerged as a name of interest in west London, though City will likely need to exceed Chelsea's already steep asking price if they wish to secure Fernández at this stage.

Emiliano Martínez ensured that at least one member of Argentina's 2022 World Cup-winning squad featured in Chelsea's starting lineup on Sunday. The newly signed goalkeeper, recruited from Aston Villa, was handed his debut for the club just hours after his official presentation.
"We are delighted to have him," Alonso enthused. "To have a goalkeeper of his stature, his personality, I think he will bring a lot of qualities. I'm sure he can have a straight impact. We spoke, he felt ready to play, so here we go."
Young Belgian stopper Mike Penders kept his place on the bench, while Robert Sánchez was dropped from the matchday squad entirely. It has been widely reported that the 28-year-old will depart this summer after being displaced in the goalkeeping hierarchy, with his diminished standing further highlighted by Sunday's exclusion.
"It was a decision we thought was good for the team, for the club," Alonso stated bluntly. "Sometimes you have to take tough decisions because this one is an important one. But now we need to look forward."
