The Real Reason Mohamed Salah Is Walking Away From Liverpool This Summer

Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah will be departing the club at the conclusion of the 2025–26 season, bringing the curtain down on an iconic spell in the famous red jersey.

The club made the stunning announcement on Tuesday evening, confirming the upcoming departure of Liverpool's third-highest scorer of all time. Salah, who arrived from AS Roma prior to the 2017–18 campaign, helped the Reds claim two Premier League titles, conquer the Champions League and secure six additional trophies throughout his storied time at Anfield.

The Egyptian international has always been deeply devoted to the club, going so far as to sign a two-year contract extension last year, pledging his loyalty to Liverpool despite lucrative overtures from the Saudi Pro League. However, a dismal 2025–26 campaign appears to have altered the course of Salah's future entirely.

Why Salah Is Leaving Liverpool Before His Contract Expires

Salah's recent difficulties both on and off the field undoubtedly contributed to his early departure from Liverpool. The decision was clearly not made impulsively, but rather emerged following a gradual accumulation of problems throughout the season, stretching all the way back to August.

There was widespread excitement across Merseyside heading into the 2025–26 season. Already the reigning Premier League champions, Liverpool splashed the cash to bring in high-profile additions Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitiké, among others, to Anfield over the summer.

The array of new arrivals joined an already well-established squad of seasoned winners, with Salah at the forefront. The forward was coming off a remarkable season that concluded with 34 goals, 23 assists and a record-breaking third PFA Player of the Year award.

Yet things quickly unraveled for Arne Slot's side, and Salah felt as though he was being made the scapegoat for the team's poor performances. Despite slow starts from Wirtz and Isak, costly errors from Ibrahima Konaté and Liverpool's repeated failure to hold on late in matches, it was the club's iconic figure who found himself in the crosshairs for his shortcomings.

Salah Takes Aim at Slot, Liverpool

Tensions boiled over in December after Slot repeatedly left Salah out of the starting lineup in search of a solution to the Reds' struggles. The Egyptian launched a pointed attack on the Dutchman and the club, stating he had been "thrown under the bus" and felt undervalued by the team he had given everything to across nine seasons.

Slot and Salah remained at loggerheads for a period before the pair appeared to resolve their differences. However, the reconciliation and Salah's return to the starting eleven failed to spark a turnaround for Liverpool. The defending English champions are languishing in fifth place in the Premier League, barely clinging to Champions League qualification for the following season.

Poor Form Leaves Salah Out of Excuses

Throughout it all, Salah continued to struggle, appearing a shadow of the player he once was. Across 34 appearances in 2025–26, he has managed just 10 goals, putting him on course for the lowest scoring return of his Liverpool career.

Supporters began calling for rising star Rio Ngumoha to take the 33-year-old's place in the starting lineup and inject some energy into the Reds' attack. Gradually, Salah found himself transformed into a villain in the eyes of pundits and fans who had once idolized him.

Amid his increasingly uncertain standing on Merseyside, the lure of the transfer market has grown stronger, with clubs in MLS and the Saudi Pro League eager to throw significant money at Salah to entice him into a new chapter elsewhere—and it appears the legendary forward has finally taken them up on the offer.
