The Real Reason Rodri Is Sitting Out Barcelona's Clash Against Al Ahly

Rodri has admitted that his heart "will always be linked" to Manchester City, while reassuring Barcelona fans that representing his new club is a "dream" come true.

The reigning 2024 Ballon d'Or holder and newly crowned World Cup Golden Ball winner has been officially presented by Spain's dominant force after Barça struck a $69 million deal with the Cityzens to secure the 30-year-old's services.

Rodri spent the past seven seasons in Manchester, claiming every major honor available under Pep Guardiola. However, with City's long-serving boss departing at the close of the 2025–26 campaign, a new era is beginning at the Etihad Stadium.

The elite midfielder, who was heading into the final year of his deal, chose not to be part of that transition, initially drawing interest from Real Madrid. Yet once Rodri became aware of Barcelona's pursuit, his decision was clear.

However, Blaugrana supporters will have to wait a little longer before seeing their marquee addition in competitive action.

When Will Rodri Make His Barcelona Debut?

Barcelona officially presented Rodri on Tuesday ahead of another La Liga title defense. Before their league opener at Elche on Sunday, Barça will host the Joan Gamper Trophy on Wednesday against Egypt's most decorated club, Al Ahly.

High-profile new arrivals Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi are expected to feature, having already made their preseason appearances, but Rodri will not be making his Barça debut on the occasion.

Reports surfaced earlier this summer suggesting the 30-year-old would require back surgery following the World Cup, potentially delaying his start to the 2026–27 season. However, Rodri indicated at his presentation that he would be fit to play as soon as possible.

"I'm ready to play now," he stated confidently. "The operation was nothing serious; it was an outpatient procedure.

"I hope to be able to train normally tomorrow [Wednesday]. Whatever the manager decides is best. I just need to finalize the transfer and get under Hansi's orders as soon as possible."

Rodri will not be risked in the traditional exhibition fixture. Nevertheless, his words will energize an already thrilled fanbase, who believe the midfielder could be the crucial missing piece for the Blaugrana to reclaim the Champions League. It has been 11 years since they last lifted the European crown, reaching only the semifinals and quarterfinals across Hansi Flick's two seasons at the helm.

Barcelona's motivation may have been partly driven by Real Madrid's reported interest. Midfield is far from a weak area in Catalonia, though Frenkie de Jong's knee ligament injury did create an opening for a potential reinforcement. Barcelona remain uncertain about when the Dutchman will return to the pitch.

Rodri represents far more than a short-term fix, however. The Spaniard has signed a four-year contract and will slot directly into Flick's midfield alongside Pedri once he is match-ready.

Thrilled by the 30-year-old's arrival, Barcelona's head coach told the club's media: "He's a fantastic player who brings something special to every team, and for me it's brilliant to have him here."

Flick went even further in his admiration, calling Rodri the world's "best No. 6" and stating that he "raises the standard of every player."
