Manchester United have acted swiftly—and somewhat unexpectedly—to enter "advanced talks" over a deal to sign Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans.
Recent developments had confirmed that the Old Trafford club opted to pull out of an agreed, yet unsigned, deal to bring in Éderson from Atalanta. Whispers of a medical concern have been cited as the reason behind that decision, though the swift pivot to Tielemans and the speed with which negotiations have progressed at least hints at a calculated change of direction rather than a reactive one.
Tielemans is expected to cost marginally less than Éderson, whose £35 million ($47 million) fee was set to rise further with various add-ons. Tielemans is attainable for a notably accessible £35 million due to a release clause embedded in his Aston Villa contract.
The Belgian is two years Éderson's senior but is a proven commodity in the Premier League, having made just under 250 appearances in the division across two high-calibre clubs since 2019. Prior to playing a key role in Aston Villa's rise as one of England's elite sides, he was instrumental in Leicester City securing four consecutive top-eight finishes. He also netted the decisive goal in the 2021 FA Cup final.
Tielemans is a polished passer, tenacious ball-winner and capable long-range shooter. Combined with the acquisition of Andrey Santos from Chelsea, Manchester United could land two quality midfielders for roughly the same fee Tottenham Hotspur paid for Mateus Fernandes alone.
Tielemans's Potential Shirt Numbers at Man Utd

There is one number most closely associated with Tielemans—the number 8—which he has regularly worn for Belgium since 2018, adopted at Leicester in the summer of 2019, and carried with him when he arrived at Aston Villa in 2023. The obvious hurdle at Manchester United, however, is that the number 8 is currently held by Bruno Fernandes.
Throughout his career, Tielemans has donned a variety of shirt numbers, starting out with 31 at boyhood club Anderlecht before switching to 17 upon his move to Monaco. He began his Leicester stint—which kicked off in January 2019 following a winter transfer—wearing the number 21. At international level in his earlier years, he also wore 6, 16, 17, 18 and 24 for Belgium.
So while the number 8 is unavailable at Old Trafford, many of the other numbers Tielemans has previously worn remain open. Should the number 8 hold particular significance, then 18 could be a viable option following Casemiro's exit. Fernandes himself wore that number before dropping the leading digit back in 2022.

Shirt Numbers That Could Become Available

Major departures beyond those already released on free transfers are not widely anticipated at Manchester United this summer. The focus of this transfer window is on adding depth around a solid but compact core that managed to string together consistent Premier League victories in the back half of last season, albeit without the strain of competing across multiple competitions.
There was a time when Manuel Ugarte appeared likely to depart, which would have freed up the number 25, but a serious knee injury sustained at the World Cup has put any such move on hold indefinitely. Other fringe players from last season, such as Joshua Zirkzee, who wears 11, are expected to see considerably more playing time in 2026–27 given the heavier fixture schedule, reducing any potential motivation to seek a move elsewhere.
