Portugal kick off their 2026 World Cup preparations this Sunday as they travel to co-host nation Mexico for their first international fixture of the year. However, they'll be without the all-time top male international goalscorer: Cristiano Ronaldo.
Portugal head to Mexico City for the opening match of a two-game friendly series against upcoming tournament host nations. Roberto Martínez's side are looking to start 2026 on a winning note and build momentum as they chase their first ever World Cup title in North America this summer.
The former Belgium boss has a wealth of talent at his disposal within a strong squad, yet has consistently relied on Ronaldo since taking charge. The 41-year-old remains a regular starter when fit, eager to add to his remarkable 143-goal haul with the Seleção das Quinas.
However, the opportunity to extend that record won't come this March, as Ronaldo has been ruled out of both friendlies against Mexico and the United States.
Why Cristiano Ronaldo Isn't Playing for Portugal Against Mexico

There's no dramatic story behind Ronaldo's absence from Portugal's World Cup warm-up matches. The Al Nassr striker is simply dealing with a hamstring injury that has kept him on the sidelines since late February.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star has sat out Al Nassr's last two games as the club battles for the Saudi Pro League crown, unable to recover in time to join the national team setup.
Martínez was nonetheless quick to reassure fans that Ronaldo's injury is not expected to be a prolonged issue, confirming that his place at what would be a record-extending sixth and final World Cup this summer remains secure.
"The World Cup is not at risk [for Ronaldo]," Martínez told reporters when addressing his squad selection. "He's not at risk, no. It's a minor muscle injury and we expect him to be back within a week or two. Everything Cristiano has done physically this season shows he's in excellent condition."
A recent social media update from Ronaldo also offered encouraging signs about his recovery. The veteran posted an upbeat photo of himself smiling alongside the caption: "Good to be back! Looking good."
Ronaldo will use the international break to focus on his rehabilitation, with hopes of returning to action for Al Nassr's upcoming clash against bottom-placed Al Najma on Friday, April 3.
Ronaldo is not the only notable absentee for Portugal. Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva is also sidelined through injury, while Diogo Costa, Rafael Leão, and young talent Rodrigo Mora have all been forced to withdraw due to fitness concerns.
