Manchester City welcome Crystal Palace on Wednesday in a must-win match to maintain pressure on Arsenal in the Premier League title race, though they'll be without top scorer Erling Haaland in the starting eleven.
After a sluggish beginning to the calendar year, Haaland has hit top form down the stretch, contributing five goals in City's last four Premier League outings. The Norwegian tops the Premier League Golden Boot standings with 26 goals, and he remains a key factor in why the Citizens still have a shot at claiming their seventh league crown in nine seasons.
Man City need to win all three of their remaining fixtures and rely on Arsenal slipping up in one of their final two matches to secure the title. With no room for error, Haaland's omission from the starting lineup against Palace came as quite a shock.
So what's behind the decision?
Man City Prioritizing FA Cup Final

Haaland's absence from the starting lineup against Crystal Palace is not due to injury but is instead a precautionary call. It appears Pep Guardiola wants his star forward fresh and fully prepared for the 2025–26 FA Cup final against Chelsea on Saturday at Wembley.
The Norwegian contributed a goal and an assist in City's 3–0 victory over Brentford at the weekend, and Guardiola will likely bring him on as a substitute against Palace if the situation calls for it.
Guardiola also took the bold step of benching attacking starters Rayan Cherki and Jérémy Doku. Additionally, Rodri and Nico O'Reilly, two other key contributors in recent weeks, have been left out of the squad entirely for the match against Oliver Glasner's side.
Anything short of a victory against Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening would hand Arsenal the opportunity to be crowned Premier League champions with a win over Burnley the following Monday.
Guardiola's rotation gamble could easily prove costly, though City still possess enough quality depth to cover for their absent regulars.
Man City Confirmed XI vs. Crystal Palace
Omar Marmoush, who netted his first City goal since early March during the weekend fixture, will step in for Haaland up front against Crystal Palace. Phil Foden and Savinho are also handed starting berths, with Antoine Semenyo rounding out the attacking line.
For the first time since January 4, Croatian defender Joško Gvardiol returns to the fold and will start at left back.
Summer arrival Rayan Aït-Nouri will cover for O'Reilly and operate further forward as a left winger.
Man City starting XI vs. Crystal Palace (4-1-4-1): Donnarumma; Gvardiol, Guéhi, Khusanov, Nunes; Silva; Savinho, Semenyo, Foden, Aït-Nouri; Marmoush
Subs: Trafford, Stones, Aké, Dias, Kovačić, Cherki, Reijnders, Haaland, Doku
