The Shocking Reason Lamine Yamal Fumed Despite Barcelona's Thrilling Win Over Atletico Madrid

Hansi Flick attributed Lamine Yamal's visible "anger" at the final whistle of Barcelona's 2–1 win over Atlético Madrid on Saturday evening to frustration after the youngster had "tried everything" to end a goal drought that is clearly beginning to weigh on him.

Yamal appeared visibly upset at the end of a thrilling La Liga victory in the Spanish capital, despite his team securing three vital points at the hostile surroundings of Atlético's Metropolitano stadium. The away side went behind to Giuliano Simeone's well-executed opener before leveling through Marcus Rashford just before the break.

Atlético's Nico González received a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Yamal in first-half stoppage time, paving the way for a one-sided second half. Barcelona dominated with 83% possession and kept their hosts without a single shot as they camped in the attacking third hunting a winning goal.

Despite Yamal's relentless efforts, he was unable to find the net. It was Robert Lewandowski who ultimately delivered the decisive blow with an unconventional 87th-minute winner that deflected in off his chest.

Barcelona closed the night seven points ahead of a struggling Real Madrid at the top of La Liga and held a clear psychological edge over Atlético ahead of their two-legged Champions League quarterfinal in the coming days. Yet Yamal was far from in a celebratory mood.

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick acknowledged that his star attacker "was a little bit angry."

"He gave everything, he tried to score goals and give the last pass. It's normal. Of course he has emotion. This was the game, with emotion, but he's in the dressing room and everything is good."

Flick insisted that Yamal's mood was unrelated to his overall display, though he quickly contradicted himself by referencing the chances the winger had missed. "It was not because of how he played, he played good," the German coach said. "[Just] some situations, he tried everything, tried everything, but at the moment he does not have this fortune that he scores the goals, but it can come back."

Yamal Suffers Three-Year Dip

Lamine Yamal with his hands on his head.

This was not an isolated blank for Yamal. Saturday's match was actually the winger's fourth consecutive appearance without a goal or assist for club or country. The last time he endured a longer scoreless run was back in 2023, when he was still 16 years old and Xavi Hernández was in charge at Barcelona.

Rather than signaling any kind of decline, this notable sequence only underscores just how remarkably consistent Yamal has been throughout the early stages of his professional career.

Despite his frustrations, the teenager's performance against Atlético was yet another showcase of his extraordinary ability. Yamal struck the post, left defenders looking foolish, and drew involuntary gasps from the Atlético faithful with a string of outrageous outside-of-the-boot passes that his teammates failed to convert into assists.

González had already lost his composure well before his dismissal, having repeatedly failed to contain Yamal. The Argentine forward, shoehorned into a left back role, looked completely out of his depth as he spun helplessly around Barça's elusive No. 10. González was so rattled that he punched the ball away to stop Yamal receiving a pass — and that was after just 22 minutes.

His red card will rule González out of the next three La Liga fixtures, though he will be eligible to feature against Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal at Camp Nou on Wednesday. However, given his evening of total humiliation at Yamal's hands, Diego Simeone might be wise to consider a different approach — rather than risk making Barcelona's talisman even more determined.
