The Golden Boy Award honors the finest player under 21 competing in European leagues, yet 19-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal will not be claiming the coveted prize in 2026.
The Barcelona and Spain teenager is widely regarded as one of the best—if not the absolute best—players on the planet, despite his young age. Yamal has dominated the sport over the past three years, shattering numerous records, winning major trophies, and accumulating a host of individual accolades.
Since Italian newspaper Tuttosport established the award back in 2003, the Golden Boy Award has grown into a prestigious honor reserved for the finest young talents in the game.
Yet despite being arguably the greatest teenage footballer in history, Yamal's name was absent from the newly released list of 2026 Golden Boy nominees. While this may seem surprising at first glance, there is a straightforward explanation for his exclusion.
Why Lamine Yamal Can't Win 2026 Golden Boy Award

Yamal is not in the running for the 2026 Golden Boy Award because he already claimed the prestigious prize as a 17-year-old in 2024—becoming the youngest recipient in the award's history.
While no formal rule explicitly prohibits repeat winners, the Golden Boy website notes that "this is customary, indeed convention" for previous winners not to receive the award again, even if they still meet the age requirement and play in European leagues.
Yamal's club teammate Pau Cubarsí is the frontrunner for the 2026 award, having also been named Best Young Player at the 2026 World Cup. Should Cubarsí take home the honor, Barcelona and Spain talents will have claimed the prize in four of the past six years.

Can Lamine Yamal Win 2026 Kopa Trophy?

The Kopa Trophy is the Ballon d'Or equivalent of the Golden Boy Award. It is presented to the best U-21 player in the world—not just Europe—and unlike the Golden Boy, previous winners are eligible to win again, as Yamal himself can confirm.
Last year, Yamal became the first player ever to win the Kopa Trophy on multiple occasions, claiming the award for the second consecutive year following his initial victory in 2024. The reigning back-to-back champion is once again among the nominees and could secure a historic third straight win in 2026.
While a third Kopa Trophy would be a remarkable achievement, Yamal has an even greater prize in his sights. The teenager has openly campaigned for the 2026 Ballon d'Or in recent months and has a strong case to support his bid.
Given the current voting criteria, there is a real possibility that Yamal becomes the first player in history to win both the Kopa Trophy and the Ballon d'Or on the same evening.
