Arsenal made two signings from Manchester United this weekend, acquiring James Scanlon on Saturday before confirming the addition of Habeeb Ogunneye from the same club the following day.
The moves are part of a deliberate strategy by the Gunners to bolster their academy ranks this summer, with five such signings completed within just the past five days.
Scanlon, who turns 20 next month, and Ogunneye, who reaches 21 in November, are promising talents hoping to work their way into the first-team picture. Neither managed a senior appearance for Manchester United, though both featured on the senior bench and gained first-team experience in EFL League Two through loan spells last season.
The moves represent something of a reversal of the transfer that saw 18-year-old Ayden Heaven depart Arsenal for Manchester United in January 2025, seeking a more defined route to senior football. The center back has since accumulated 25 senior appearances and looks to have a promising future ahead, seemingly justifying his decision to move clubs in pursuit of greater opportunities.
Arsenal Sign Left-Wing Prospect
Scanlon grew up in England's East Midlands, having come through Derby County's youth setup before relocating to Manchester at the age of 14, but appears drawn to Arsenal by the club's recent Premier League momentum and its upward direction.
"I think you can see where the club's at, [it's] really positive and I think it's only going to get better," the teenager told Arsenal's official media channel.
"You can see that everyone here is hungrier for more, hungrier to get better and I think that's something I believe I can add to and want to be a part of as well."
With Arsenal yet to secure a left winger this summer while simultaneously offloading Gabriel Martinelli to Al Hilal, there could be a genuine opening in the first team for Scanlon, who operates on the left flank or as a No. 10. The youngster, who already boasts 24 international caps for Gibraltar, describes himself as a "creative player" who enjoys scoring goals and providing assists.
Arsenal's Recent Youth Development Stands Out
Ogunneye hails from London and retains strong ties to the city, despite spending 15 years — the majority of his young life — associated with Manchester United.
The right back said upon completing his move that he hopes to benefit from Arsenal's well-regarded development pathway, as others have done in recent years.
"When I heard [Arsenal] were interested in me, I said to my agents it's a no-brainer," Ogunneye said. "Seeing all the young players that are coming through as well, I just wanted to come straight away. I just wanted to be part of that group, and win games together. It's good playing with good players, good defenders; it's only going to better you."
Myles Lewis-Skelly, Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri have all successfully transitioned from Arsenal's Hale End academy to the senior squad in recent seasons. Bukayo Saka was similarly just 18 when he became a regular starter for the first team back in 2019.
In Ogunneye's position, the competition initially appears stiffer than what Scanlon may encounter, with Jurriën Timber and Ben White serving as the main right-back options. Cristhian Mosquera and Ezri Konsa are also capable of filling the role, though both are primarily regarded as center backs.
It is worth noting, however, that Timber has been sidelined and has missed a cumulative 443 days through injury since his arrival in 2023. White has also frequently been linked with a departure after losing his starting spot, meaning Ogunneye may not be too far from his own opportunity.
