The Shocking Truth Behind Bruno Fernandes's Record-Breaking Assist That Has Everyone Divided

The Shocking Truth Behind Bruno Fernandes's Record-Breaking Assist That Has Everyone Divided

As Bruno Fernandes prepared to take a first-half corner in Manchester United's final Premier League fixture of the season, his predominant feeling was one of uncertainty.

Without the aerial threat of Casemiro to target, Michael Carrick's assistant Jonny Evans had designed the set-piece routine for Patrick Dorgu to make a run and attack the delivery. Fernandes remained skeptical.

"Jonny had more faith than me in that set piece we had worked on for Patrick, because I wasn't entirely confident he'd be able to score with a header," the midfielder would later confess.

Dorgu did indeed connect with the ball, and Fernandes was credited with his 21st Premier League assist of the campaign, breaking the record previously shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. Yet, those lingering doubts would weigh heavily on the minds of many observers who took a closer look at the sequence of events.

Replays of the incident showed Dorgu's header striking the underside of the crossbar before the ball deflected off the outstretched glove of Brighton's Bart Verbruggen. Many felt that scenario should have been ruled an own goal by the Dutch goalkeeper, which would have denied Fernandes his historic assist. As Opta's official definitions state: "In the event of an own goal ... an assist will not be awarded."

The Premier League, however, saw things differently.

Premier League Release Statement on Fernandes Assist Debate

The Premier League was approached by multiple outlets questioning whether Fernandes's assist was legitimate following Manchester United's 3–0 victory. The league's response was brief and to the point: there was no issue.

"It was ruled a Dorgu goal yesterday," a spokesperson told football.london. "Initially by Opta, and then confirmed without change by the Goal Accreditation Panel."

The Goal Accreditation Panel—formerly known by the far more memorable name of The Dubious Goals Committee—is a secretive three-person body which "usually consists of a representative of the PGMOL and two football experts," according to the Premier League's rather broad description.

Dorgu's effort clips the crossbar and strikes Verbruggen's wrist almost instantly, leaving very little margin to determine whether the ball would have crossed the line without the goalkeeper's touch. It appears a convenient decision for the Premier League to award the goal to Dorgu and sidestep the controversy of stripping Fernandes of his record-breaking assist.

Shortly after the final whistle, Fernandes paid tribute to the two legends he had overtaken. "It was already something special just to be in their [Henry and De Bruyne's] company," he said. "We're talking about two players who made the Premier League so great, and they were among the finest the league has ever seen."

After taking time to reflect on his milestone, Fernandes expressed his admiration further by posting a video on social media featuring the shirts of Henry and De Bruyne displayed alongside his own, with the caption: "Inspired by those who set the standard."

Despite the contentious nature of his key delivery, Henry harbored no resentment toward Fernandes. Steven Bartlett reached out to the Arsenal icon ahead of a podcast interview and shared Henry's warm response. "Please pass on my congratulations to him!" the retired World Cup winner wrote. "I love him! Braino Fernandes!"

This is far from the first time Henry has praised Fernandes. The prolific creator—who also netted 24 Premier League goals in the same season he provided 20 assists—offered a glowing endorsement of Manchester United's skipper during a Sky Sports appearance earlier in the campaign. "He doesn't play football," Henry enthused, "he thinks it."

De Bruyne has yet to publicly address Fernandes's achievement. However, given his previous grievances regarding the Premier League's criteria for what qualifies as an assist, his perspective on the league's latest ruling would certainly make for fascinating reading.
