Only a handful of soccer players have earned the "both names" treatment from commentators.
For one reason or another, the last name alone simply doesn't cut it. It could be a matter of rhythm, syllable flow, or the need to differentiate between players sharing common surnames.
This curious trend has been especially noticeable in the Premier League, with the likes of Solly March, Reece James, Dele Alli, Pedro Porro, and Harvey Barnes counted among its distinguished members. These names just feel incomplete when spoken separately.
The club welcomes new additions, but its senior members — most notably Reece James and Pedro Porro — are weighing up whether to welcome one of their most high-profile recruits yet.
Lamine Yamal is a phenomenon. A two-time Ballon d'Or podium finisher before even leaving his teenage years, the Barcelona winger has already claimed multiple La Liga titles, along with a World Cup and European Championship with Spain. He would be a remarkable addition, yet commentators haven't fully committed. You still hear "Yamal" or even "Lamine" used on its own as he tears down the right flank with another breathtaking run.
Yet once the story behind the 19-year-old's name becomes widely known, full membership will surely follow.
Common Mistake Surrounding Lamine Yamal's Name

Ever since he burst onto the scene, many have assumed that "Lamine Yamal" is the youngster's complete name — but that's actually incorrect. His father, Mounir Nasraoui, recently clarified on a live stream that "Yamal" is not his son's surname.
"I want to make something clear, everyone should know: 'Lamine Yamal' is a first name," he stated during a live stream with Terreno Viral. "'Yamal' is not a surname, folks. His surnames are Nasraoui Ebana. So please, don't get it mixed up. That's why his father refers to him as 'Lamine Yamal,' for better or worse."
Over the summer, as Yamal was guiding Spain to World Cup glory, BBC reported that Yamal carries the surnames of both his mother, Sheila Ebana, and his father, Nasraoui.
"Lamine Yamal" actually originates from a promise his parents made before his birth to two close friends — one named Lamine (meaning "the faithful" in Arabic) and the other Yamal (meaning "beauty" in Arabic) — who had provided vital financial assistance to Ebana and Nasraoui. As a tribute to their unwavering generosity, the couple vowed that if they were ever blessed with a son, he would bear both friends' names.
And so, Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana came into the world.
