The Surprising Reason New Barcelona Star Anthony Gordon Is Already Fluent In Spanish

The Surprising Reason New Barcelona Star Anthony Gordon Is Already Fluent In Spanish

Barcelona officially introduced Anthony Gordon as their first acquisition of the summer transfer window, and the English winger turned heads when he fielded questions in confident Spanish during his unveiling ceremony.

A transfer fee of $93.2 million (€80 million) secured Gordon's move from Newcastle United to Barcelona, and following a nine-hour delay, the 25-year-old was formally confirmed as a new Barça player.

During his presentation, he responded to questions in both English and Spanish, and went on to explain the reason behind his decision to learn the language most widely spoken in Barcelona's dressing room.

"I wanted to speak Spanish because as a kid I believed I would play for Barça, believe it or not," Gordon said. "I was excited to play for Barça when I was three years of age. I have a physio [physiotherapist] in Newcastle and we spoke every day and I told him one day I would play for Barça so I want to learn Spanish. That's why."

Gordon's words carry real weight. In an interview with Versus the previous summer, the winger revealed he had been watching the popular Spanish series Elite because he was "trying to learn Spanish," and acknowledged that becoming fluent in the language was a personal goal. It seems that goal has now been realized.

Barcelona's pursuit of Gordon quickly turned into a finalized deal within just a few hours. Bayern Munich had been considered the leading contenders for his signature, but once Barcelona entered the picture, Gordon had no hesitation about his preferred destination.

"I found out very late from Barça [of their interest], but as soon as I knew Barça was a serious option there was never any question," Gordon confessed. "I always wanted Barça. Barça are the biggest club on the planet. I know it comes with a lot of responsibility.

"I'm ready for that kind of challenge. I know the players who have worn the shirt in the past. It holds a lot of weight, but I am ready for the challenge."

When questioned about his primary goal following his move to Barça, Gordon's response aligned perfectly with the ambitions shared by every Barcelona player, coach, director, and supporter.

"I only won one trophy with Newcastle. I'm extremely excited and have a burning fire in my belly to win here at the biggest club in the world, which is the best possible outcome.

"If I had to pick one trophy, it would be the Champions League, of course. La numero seis (The sixth one)," Gordon admitted.

Gordon: Barcelona Have the 'Best Players In The World'

Gordon had the opportunity to face Barcelona three times throughout 2025–26, as Newcastle and the Catalan club clashed during the Champions League group stage and again in the round of 16. Barcelona ultimately knocked Newcastle out with a commanding 7–2 victory at Camp Nou.

Beyond expressing his enthusiasm about linking up with Lamine Yamal, Gordon also praised the abilities of midfielders Pedri and Frenkie de Jong. The Englishman appears fully convinced that he is joining a squad packed with some of the finest talents in world football.

"To play with Lamine [Yamal] and the rest of the players is very exciting for me," Gordon said. "The more players you have around with quality, the better you're going to be. These players are at the very top level for a reason, they're the best players in the world. They have so much quality.

"I saw this when we [Newcastle] played them at St. James' Park, we couldn't touch the ball. To do this at St James' Park is really difficult because we played with a lot of pressure, a lot ofd intensity. The fans are also amazing and they can create an intense atmosphere. But Frenkie [De Jong] and Pedri ... they ruined our plan."

Having put pen to paper on a Barcelona contract running through 2031, Gordon now turns his attention to England's 2026 World Cup squad as he prepares for his first major international tournament. By late July, however, the Spanish-speaking forward will link up with Flick's side as he looks to help Barcelona pursue their ambitious targets for the 2026–27 season.
