Thomas Frank Reveals Tottenham's Surprise New Captain Following Son's Shocking Departure

Cristian Romero has taken over from Son Heung-min as Tottenham Hotspur's new captain, despite ongoing speculation about a potential departure during the summer transfer window.
The talented Argentine defender arrived at Spurs from Atalanta in summer 2022, quickly becoming a cornerstone of the club's defensive setup when available and not serving suspensions. Nevertheless, Romero's outstanding performances have caught the attention of competing teams.
Both Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid showed strong interest in the aggressive center-back during the summer months, especially since Romero didn't dismiss the transfer rumors. "My ambition is always to advance and explore new opportunities for continued growth," the 27-year-old deliberately stated in April.
However, it appears Romero will be developing his career in north London.

"I held a productive discussion with Cuti Romero, and he will serve as our captain," Frank announced to the gathered press before Tottenham's UEFA Super Cup match against Paris Saint-Germain. "He felt deeply honored and extremely pleased about the appointment. It represents a significant responsibility to lead this magnificent club onto the field, not only for this Super Cup, but for the entire campaign."
Atlético Madrid allegedly withdrew their pursuit of Romero last month, though the defender is believed to have declined a contract renewal offer from Spurs. Whether his position will change following this captaincy announcement remains uncertain.
"I believe he possesses all the necessary attributes," Frank commented about his newly appointed captain. "He demonstrates leadership through his on-field conduct, motivating the squad in every aspect, and off the pitch he consistently encourages the team.
"I also want to establish a leadership collective. Naturally, one player will wear the captain's armband, but I'd prefer to have multiple leaders, around four to five in the leadership circle who can contribute, because just like myself, I cannot handle everything alone and require an excellent coaching team around me. I will announce that leadership group after the transfer window closes to allow myself time to evaluate all factors."
