There's a special kind of confidence that comes with having Thomas Müller on your side—and with a fervent Vancouver Whitecaps fanbase rallying behind the club amid its uncertain future, that energy reaches an entirely different level.
After dropping their MLS season opener 1–0 to the San Jose Earthquakes before the March international break, the Whitecaps delivered one of 2026's most stunning turnarounds on Saturday, overcoming a 2–1 deficit in the 90th minute to claim a 3–2 victory on goals from Müller and Sebastian Berhalter.
"We believe in each other, we believe in the staff, and the scoreline doesn't matter," Berhalter said after netting the winner deep in stoppage time, showing no signs of fatigue despite representing the U.S. men's national team against Belgium and Portugal over the previous week.
"It's a reflection of our culture, a reflection of the group that everyone keeps the faith and nobody loses their head—that's who we are."

Having dismantled the Timbers 4–1 back in March, Vancouver entered Saturday's home fixture as clear favorites, taking a 1–0 lead in the sixth minute before Portland fought back with impressive finishes from Juan Mosquera and David Da Costa to lead at the break.
Although the Whitecaps largely dominated proceedings—finishing with 22 shots compared to Portland's eight—they were unable to find an equalizer until the closing stages. First came a disputed handball on the edge of the box that handed Müller a penalty, which he converted for his third spot-kick of the season in the 91st minute.

Shortly after, riding a wave of momentum and boosted by the dynamic attacking runs of new addition Bruno Caicedo, the Whitecaps snatched the lead as Berhalter fired home from the top of the box on the match's final kick to seal all three points.
For Vancouver, it signaled a return to last season's never-say-die mentality, while also pushing them to six points in the Cascadia Cup standings—the regional competition contested between themselves, Portland, and the Seattle Sounders.
Berhalter's World Cup Hopes

While the Timbers represent a different challenge compared to elite international opposition, Berhalter's MLS performance was eye-catching, especially coming off a 79-minute outing against Portugal on Tuesday in Atlanta.
"Once it dropped to me," Berhalter said, "I knew I was going to score."
Yet it was his actions after the final whistle that truly stood out. While teammates unwound among themselves following the conclusion of the match, the long-serving Whitecaps midfielder gathered the group to join supporters in the club's beloved post-victory tradition of singing "Stand By Me."

That influence, both on the pitch and in the dressing room, makes him an indispensable part of Vancouver's setup and strengthens his case for a USMNT spot at the 2026 World Cup this summer.
"In that final sequence with the goal, we lose possession and face a defensive transition. It's Sebastian tracking back and winning a tackle deep in our own half. Müller gives it away, they break on us, and he gets back to deal with it—and you can clearly see how exhausted he is," Whitecaps manager Jesper Sørensen said of his key midfielder's last contribution.
"He has that confidence now, and he just trusts himself to make things happen on the pitch. Every day he prepares as well as he possibly can to be in peak physical condition, and he keeps pushing through when things get tough."
Still navigating an uncertain future amid stadium complications, financial shortfalls, and an ongoing search for new ownership, the Whitecaps continue to perform strongly on the pitch, sitting second in the Western Conference with 13 points from six matches—just one behind LAFC at the top—heading into next week's clash with New York City FC.
