Thomas Muller Reveals How His Rejected Man Utd Move Rewrote Football History
Thomas Müller has confessed that he seriously contemplated a move to Manchester United back in 2014, disclosing that an "intriguing" proposal was presented to him to leave Bayern Munich for Old Trafford. He acknowledged it was indeed the "perfect timing" in his professional journey for such a transition.
If Müller had made that leap, it would have dramatically altered the past decade for both United, who continued to drift away from contending for major titles, and Bayern, who went on to capture 33 trophies before his 2025 departure while he became their record appearance holder with 756 matches. Müller's 250 goals also secured him third place on Bayern's all-time scoring list.
The ex-Germany star has achieved legendary status at Bayern that few others can match, yet his path could have taken a completely different direction had he chosen differently nearly 12 years ago.
"There was a period when Louis van Gaal, my most impactful mentor, was managing United and I genuinely contemplated it," Müller revealed when presented with a 2014–15 Manchester United jersey during his guest spot on the Away Days YouTube show.
Müller had nearly departed Bayern previously, before establishing himself permanently in the first team, and was close to signing with Hoffenheim to secure consistent senior playing opportunities. Hermann Gerland, Bayern Munich II coach and first-team assistant at the time, fought vigorously to prevent the move, with Van Gaal subsequently making the 20-year-old Müller a crucial player upon his 2009 appointment.
Van Gaal didn't achieve similar success in Manchester, later expressing disappointment about the club's transfer strategy, but he was already celebrated throughout Europe for his accomplishments with Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern and the Dutch national squad. Müller wasn't the only one who benefited from his influence in Munich, as Bastian Schweinsteiger was transformed from winger to elite defensive midfielder, Philipp Lahm was given captaincy responsibilities and Holger Badstuber was also elevated to the senior team.

"It was a compelling proposal [from United] and represented perfect timing," Müller recalled. "However, I still had three years remaining on my contract and Bayern rejected [the transfer] immediately.
"That actually gave me confidence, knowing Bayern declared, 'Absolutely not, we're keeping you regardless, there's no possibility of departure.' Subsequently, I renewed my deal and remained content at Bayern. It wasn't about being unhappy at Bayern, but it was an attractive offer and with Louis van Gaal as manager, it held appeal for me."
Following the 2013–14 campaign, Manchester United were merely one season removed from their most recent Premier League title. Despite finishing seventh under David Moyes and failing to qualify for European competition, it marked just the beginning of a reconstruction project that continues today.
At that point in his career, Müller had featured in 256 matches for Bayern, netting 99 goals. He had claimed 11 trophies, including the Champions League as part of a treble in 2012–13, and had recently become a 2014 World Cup champion with Germany. It represented a clear chance to challenge himself in a new environment.
In a previous discussion, Müller acknowledged that United attempted to recruit him "repeatedly" throughout his career. Van Gaal himself disclosed to talkSPORT years afterward that approaches were made in both 2014 and 2015, the latter occurring just before Müller enjoyed his most prolific goalscoring campaign (32 goals) of his career. The Dutch manager suggested it was reluctance from the player's spouse about relocating internationally that prevented a deal.
German media reported in 2015 that the Red Devils offered a £70 million transfer fee, while club executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stated in 2016 that a "crazy offer" from United the previous year would have resulted in a "world-record transfer sum" for Bayern. The most expensive transfer in history at that time was Gareth Bale's 2013 switch to Real Madrid for approximately £85 million.

The 35-year-old Müller informed CBS after departing Bayern last summer that the opportunity to become a Manchester United player had permanently passed. "I'm not suitable for them and they're not the right fit for me," he stated directly, beginning a fresh adventure in Major League Soccer instead.
Müller joined the Vancouver Whitecaps near the conclusion of the 2025 MLS regular season, assisting the squad in securing second place in the Western Conference table and advancing through the playoffs to reach the MLS Cup final for the first time in club history.
"Extremely demanding," is how he characterized that initial experience, now beginning the second year of his contract through the end of 2026. "I came to the Whitecaps in August, so I experienced an incredible four months, just as the playoffs were beginning. We enjoyed a successful campaign, the furthest playoff advancement in the organization's history."
Müller demonstrates thorough knowledge of his club, effortlessly referencing the original Whitecaps' NASL championship victory in 1979.
The next objective, after losing the final to Lionel Messi's Inter Miami last season, is to improve by one step and become the first Western Conference Canadian franchise to claim MLS glory.
