Following a scathing, no-holds-barred attack on Manchester United's board and recruitment approach, Lisandro Martínez's future at Old Trafford is hanging by a thread.
The Argentine center back let loose in a stunning outburst after United's 2–0 loss to Atlético Madrid, a result that extended the Red Devils' winless run to five matches.
According to The Athletic, Martínez's tirade is almost certain to result in a hefty fine, but the deeper consequences of an obviously broken relationship between the player and club hierarchy could prove far more damaging.
The 28-year-old's deal expires at the end of the current campaign, with United holding a one-year extension option. Nevertheless, the prospect of him remaining at Old Trafford beyond 2026–27 appears increasingly remote.
Martínez arrived at United in 2022 and his spell at the club has been a turbulent ride, marked by injuries, poor collective form and various other setbacks. That said, coming off an outstanding 2026 World Cup campaign with Argentina, the combative defender would attract plenty of interest on the open market.
AC Milan

Given his age, contract status and visibly strained relationship with his current club, teams likely won't need to spend big to secure Martínez, opening the door for financially constrained sides to enter the race. One such club is Ruben Amorim's AC Milan.
Reports from the summer indicated the Portuguese tactician was keen on bringing Martínez to the Rossoneri. Amorim is well acquainted with the defender from their time together at United, a stint that ended shortly after the manager himself publicly criticized the club's lack of financial backing.
Martínez has experience operating in Amorim's signature three-center-back setup. The Milan head coach also utilized him as a defensive midfielder on occasion, taking advantage of his technical quality in possession.
Milan may no longer be the dominant force they once were, but they remain a prestigious destination, and Amorim's desire to reunite with his former defender could give the club a meaningful edge in the pursuit.
Barcelona

Despite scouring the market, Barcelona have not brought in a left-footed center back since Iñigo Martínez departed in the summer of 2025. Lisandro Martínez could be the answer to their long-standing search.
On the whole, Martínez fits the mold of a Barcelona center back. He is an exceptional passer in the build-up phase, as demonstrated when he completed 117 of 120 attempted passes against Cabo Verde at the World Cup. His intensity, pace and ability to defend in space are equally vital qualities for thriving in Hansi Flick's aggressive defensive structure.
Former left back Gerard Martín has been repositioned as a full-time center back and has served as Pau Cubarsí's main partner over the past two seasons. While Martín has performed admirably, left center back remains arguably the one area where Barcelona could benefit from a stronger option.
The club appears to share that view, having publicly acknowledged they are actively seeking a left-footed center back. Martínez may no longer be in his prime years, but he still has plenty to offer, and Cubarsí has consistently looked sharper with an experienced partner by his side.
Atlético Madrid

The clear frontrunner to sign Martínez is the very club whose victory over United sparked his explosive outburst. It feels almost too fitting to picture Martínez in an Atlético Madrid shirt, joining the sizeable Argentine contingent already assembled under Diego Simeone.
According to Sky Sports, Martínez had sought a move to Atlético Madrid during the summer window, but no bid materialized that United were prepared to accept.
The appeal of the Metropolitano as a destination for Martínez is easy to understand. He would be reunited with close friend and Argentina defensive partner Cristian Romero, along with several other Argentine internationals at the club.
Simeone's intense, combative and high-energy approach also aligns naturally with Martínez's personality and playing style, making him an ideal fit at Los Rojiblancos.
Atlético Madrid have shown no hesitation in adding players even when depth already exists at a given position, and they possess ample financial resources to get a deal over the line. Recreating Argentina's elite center back partnership at club level is precisely the kind of move Simeone's side would make.
