Well, that's a wrap. The fun is over. The summer transfer window has now closed for the majority of Europe's top leagues.
Coaches across the continent, whether they welcome it or not, must now work with what they have—at least for the next four months.
Or must they? There is one avenue that could still deliver a few more transfer thrills in the days and weeks ahead: free agency.
Players whose deals have run out are not subject to the usual window restrictions and can still be signed by clubs looking to strengthen their squads ahead of January.
So, who remains out there in football's no-man's-land, waiting to be picked up and given the opportunity to show they still have what it takes? Quite a number of very prominent names, as it turns out.

11. Raheem Sterling
Age: 31
Last Club: Feyenoord
As recently as 2022, Sterling was considered one of the Premier League's—and the world's—finest attacking talents, but his reputation has taken a significant hit over the past few seasons.
The former England international was shown the door at Chelsea and failed to make an impact at Arsenal. An attempted revival in the Netherlands with Feyenoord also fell flat. This summer, the 2019 FWA Footballer of the Year faced a dangerous driving charge following a car accident in England.

Age: 30
Last Club: Monterrey
Martial burst onto the scene as a Manchester United prodigy back in 2015, but never quite managed to sustain that early brilliance.
Since leaving United in 2024, he has taken his talents to AEK Athens and Monterrey. His age hints that a final chapter may still be possible, though he hasn't surpassed ten goals in a season since 2020.
9. Oleksandr Zinchenko
Age: 29
Last Club: Ajax
A four-time Premier League champion, Zinchenko finds himself without a club after being let go by Ajax.
The Ukraine international only arrived at the Dutch club in February on a short-term basis, but his prospects of an extended stay were derailed when he suffered a serious knee injury on his debut start.
8. Jadon Sancho
Age: 26
Last Club: Aston Villa
The youngest player on this list by a considerable margin, Sancho was once regarded as the standout prospect in English football. Those days feel distant now, but there is undeniably still a player worth watching.
The winger featured in the Champions League final as recently as 2024 and has made appearances—albeit inconsistently—for Chelsea and Villa over the past two seasons as he works to rebuild his career following a turbulent stint at Manchester United.
7. Paul Pogba
Age: 33
Last Club: Monaco
Another player who never quite seemed to recover from his time at Old Trafford, Pogba became a pale imitation of the commanding midfielder who helped drive France to World Cup glory—long before his failed doping test in 2023.
Last spotted briefly at Monaco during 2025–26, recurring fitness problems have continued to derail his comeback efforts.
6. Philippe Coutinho
Age: 33
Last Club: Vasco da Gama
Once so highly regarded that Barcelona splashed £142 million ($191 million) to secure his services, Coutinho returned to his boyhood club Vasco da Gama in 2024, only to depart abruptly in February of this year.
The former Liverpool playmaker, who had been jeered by his own supporters, took to social media to announce he had chosen to "prioritize [his] mental health."
5. Jamie Vardy
Age: 39
Last Club: Cremonese
The tireless poacher is still keeping the party alive—even if things have moved into slightly awkward territory.
Vardy was unable to save Cremonese from the drop in 2025–26 during his Italian adventure, though he still managed a respectable seven goals and claimed a Serie A Player of the Month award in November.
4. Riyad Mharez
Age: 35
Last Club: Al-Ahli
In 2025, the former Manchester City and Leicester City star became one of the rare few to have lifted both the European and Asian Champions League trophies, as Al-Ahli defeated Kawasaki Frontale in the final.
Mahrez had three fruitful seasons in Saudi Arabia before his contract was—somewhat unexpectedly—terminated earlier this year.
The elegant winger also stepped away from international football with Algeria this summer, having captained his nation to the knockout stages, contributing two goals and an assist across four appearances.

A player so deeply associated with Madrid that picturing him elsewhere feels almost impossible.
Indeed, the six-time Champions League-winning right back has previously made clear he has no intention of playing for another European club, which significantly narrows his potential destinations.
2. Raphaël Guerreiro
Age: 32
Last Club: Bayern Munich
A true utility player, Guerreiro has filled multiple roles across the backline and midfield for Bayern Munich, Dortmund, and the Portuguese national team over the past decade.
He contributed an impressive five goals and three assists despite making only eight starts for Bundesliga powerhouse Bayern last season.

Age: 38
Last Club: Al-Hilal
The 2022 Ballon d'Or holder may not have a great deal left to offer at 38, but the prospect of even a handful of appearances from Benzema will be an irresistible draw for clubs across the globe.
The Real Madrid legend has recently entered the market after his contract with Al-Hilal was ended by mutual agreement at the close of August.
