Toronto FC Steals Raptors' Championship Strategy to Land Josh Sargent and Conquer the Global Stage

Toronto FC Steals Raptors' Championship Strategy to Land Josh Sargent and Conquer the Global Stage

It's rare for Toronto FC to take center stage on Bay Street in Toronto, a location typically reserved for Canada's largest corporations, and at Scotiabank Arena, home to the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and NBA's Toronto Raptors.

However, on Wednesday, the spotlight belonged entirely to the Reds. The arena's studio was decorated with Toronto FC branding as the organization unveiled U.S. men's national team forward Josh Sargent as their newest Designated Player in a transaction potentially worth $27 million, breaking MLS's incoming transfer fee record.

This major acquisition represents a broader transformation in Toronto FC's operations within Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, drawing from the organizational structure of the Toronto Raptors and Toronto Maple Leafs to drive their ambitious reconstruction.

Sargent, 26, who joins MLS for the first time following his entire professional career in Europe, represents the newest addition to Toronto FC's expensive DP roster. However, he signifies a completely different strategy.

Previously, DP status belonged to highly-regarded Italians, Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi, both of whom the organization terminated in 2025 following their notorious disappointing stint.

This strategy represents a dramatic shift from the organization's former approach under ex-president Bill Manning, whose recruitment philosophy heavily relied on free agent markets, particularly for the Italian players. These signings ultimately contributed significantly to Manning's dismissal.

"I actually visited the TransferMarkt website, and I researched the Italian national squad for players whose contracts were expiring," Manning explained to media at the time. "I began listing players I considered world-class, who I believed would bring commercial appeal to this market."

Despite those failures, Toronto clearly intended to maintain their financial strength in MLS. To achieve this, they utilized their distinctive position within MLSE. Under Keith Pelley's leadership as MLSE president and CEO, the organization has experienced rapid transformations, particularly in soccer operations.

Toronto FC reveals their new acquisition Josh Sargent.

Pelley, who assumed the MLSE leadership role in 2024, recognized TFC's significance to MLSE from a fresh perspective.

Working with general manager Jason Hernandez, he's orchestrated an intensive rebuild, acquiring 14 players following the Italians' exit, while utilizing knowledge from the Raptors and Maple Leafs.

"Our vision, our objective and our commitment to our supporters, to our fans, to everyone connected with TFC, is that we aim to compete for titles annually—which leads me to Josh Sargent," Pelley stated Wednesday.

"The soccer landscape differs significantly from the NHL or NBA, with numerous global leagues and international talent worldwide. When you examine the analytics, focus on individual player metrics, as we have, and maintain a comprehensive strategy, you can create rapid transformation."

As part of the reconstruction and the club's record-setting investment in Sargent, they utilized an internally-developed analytics platform, modeled after one employed by the Raptors. Combining this system with a restructured personnel strategy, the organization identified Sargent as their newest prospect.

"We have now adapted that [Raptors analytics platform] and are utilizing data much more extensively with TFC," Pelley continued. "Analytics has guided nearly every decision we've made, and it represents detailed information that I believe is cutting-edge in the league, and that advantage comes from TFC being part of a powerful organization like MLSE."

While no MLSE team in a major American league has achieved tremendous success since the Raptors' 2019 NBA Championship, which aligned with Toronto FC's journey to the 2019 MLS Cup final, the structure enables extensive cooperation.

Simultaneously, the profitable opportunities from NHL and NBA operations certainly help finance Toronto FC's goals, enabling them to pursue Sargent even after Norwich City rejected an initial $20 million bid.

"When I first met Josh, I hadn't embraced someone other than my wife like that in ages," said Hernandez regarding securing the U.S. striker.

"There's been tremendous time and effort invested in completing this deal, and the fact that it's finished is certainly … a relief for us and somewhat of a final page in the chapter we closed, and now beginning the new chapter."

With this latest star signing, Hernandez holds grand aspirations for Toronto FC; he aims to bring the club to the premier stage—the FIFA Club World Cup—and capture some of the most prestigious trophies.

For him, it justifies every dollar invested in Sargent, even though it may be challenging for the American to match the achievements of former USMNT striker Jozy Altidore and the success he helped Toronto achieve from 2015 to 2021.

"We view ourselves as more than simply an MLS team. We aspire to compete in competitions throughout North America, and hopefully someday in some of the premier tournaments that clubs can participate in," he stated.

"We position ourselves with global developments, and so I would expect some of Josh's peers at the position will be in that [price] range of acquisition."

Will Sargent be the catalyst to guide Toronto FC to the promised land in MLS alongside the success of Canadian rivals, Vancouver Whitecaps and other highly-praised MLS organizations? It's doubtful.

However, the acquisition and the methodology behind it indicate that MLSE's resources and cross-sport infrastructure could provide the club with the foundation to construct its next championship era.
