"I used to play as a striker," Toronto FC goalkeeper Luka Gavran revealed, after producing one of Major League Soccer's most memorable moments in recent history on Wednesday, heading home in the 96th minute to secure a 3–3 draw against the Philadelphia Union.
Gavran, who has claimed Toronto's first-choice goalkeeper spot for the first time this season, charged forward in second-half stoppage time as the Canadian club sought to respond to Philadelphia's Nathan Harriel netting a 3–2 lead in the 89th minute.
Following a series of attacking forays, the ball found its way to Dániel Sallói, who delivered a precise cross for Gavran to meet with a towering header, the ball flying beyond Andre Blake in the Philadelphia goal to level the score.
The goal marked the first time a goalkeeper had scored in Toronto FC's 19-year MLS history and stretched the club's unbeaten run to seven matches — their longest such streak since the beginning of the 2024 season.

Gavran became the first goalkeeper to find the net in MLS since Columbus Crew's William Hesmer scored against Toronto on Oct. 16, 2010. In total, only three goalkeepers have scored in MLS regular-season action since the league's inception in 1996.
"I honestly can't recall what happened; all I know is there were 10 seconds left, I glanced at the bench, and everyone was waving me forward," the Canadian shot-stopper said. "I used to play as a number nine, and you practice set pieces every day, so I'm comfortable with it."
As the ball hit the back of the net, Gavran made sure not to be immediately mobbed by teammates, instead sprinting toward the supporters and launching into a knee slide while beating his chest — a celebration he had practiced during training.
"This was the ideal moment for a knee slide," he said. "I would have pulled my jersey off, but with the gloves on it would have looked awkward, so I held back."
Can Toronto FC Continue Rekindled Form?

Having finished 12th and 11th in the Eastern Conference over the past two seasons and failing to reach the MLS Cup playoffs since 2020, the seven-game unbeaten run is reigniting optimism around Toronto FC.
The draw saw club-record acquisition Josh Sargent net his second goal since arriving for $22 million from English Championship outfit Norwich City — a deal that could climb to $27 million to surpass the MLS incoming transfer record. Meanwhile, the determination to fight back after Philadelphia's 89th-minute strike reflected a notable change in mentality under head coach Robin Fraser.
The point lifted Toronto to sixth in the Eastern Conference with 13 points from nine games, while Philadelphia saw crucial points slip away, now sitting on just one win, two draws and seven defeats through the opening stages of the 2026 campaign.
Wild Night of MLS

The goalkeeper goal and 3–3 thriller was far from the only highlight in MLS on Wednesday, as the season's first midweek fixture list delivered breathtaking action throughout.
FC Cincinnati's 17-year-old Andrei Chirila struck from range in the 92nd minute, while key man Evander added another in the 96th, as their side salvaged a dramatic 4–4 draw against New York City FC at Yankee Stadium. Across the Hudson, D.C. United's Tai Baribo bagged a hat trick in a 4–4 stalemate with Red Bull New York.
Orlando City, rooted at the foot of the Eastern Conference, stunned Charlotte FC 4–1 with a brace from Martín Ojeda, while the Houston Dynamo edged past San Diego FC in a feisty affair that saw red cards for both teams, before Inter Miami claimed their first clean sheet victory of the season with a 2–0 win over Real Salt Lake.

For Miami, it represented the first victory under new interim boss Guillermo Hoyos, with Rodrigo De Paul putting in a standout display — completing more passes than any other player and netting his second goal of the campaign. The win moved the Herons up to second in the Eastern Conference on 18 points from nine games, extending their unbeaten run to eight matches.
The evening concluded with the San Jose Earthquakes maintaining their impressive 2026 form under 74-year-old manager Bruce Arena, dismantling Austin FC 5–1. Timo Werner's second MLS goal helped propel them to the top of the Western Conference, though Vancouver Whitecaps hold a game in hand.
In all, four teenagers got on the scoresheet on Wednesday, joining a host of marquee names including De Paul, Sargent, Werner and Luis Suárez, building anticipation for a packed upcoming weekend featuring 15 matches across Saturday and Sunday.
