Tottenham Lock Down Star Defender Cristian Romero with Major Contract Extension

Tottenham Hotspur have officially announced that Cristian Romero has penned a fresh long-term deal with the North London club, coming just days after being appointed as the new captain following Son Heung-min's departure from the role.

The defender made his move to Spurs from Atalanta in 2021, though his most impressive performances have typically come while representing Argentina since his arrival at the club. The exceptional center-back has played a crucial role for his country as they secured consecutive Copa América championships and lifted the World Cup trophy in 2022.

Early lapses in judgment marked the beginning of his Tottenham journey, while fitness issues have plagued him throughout the last year and a half. Nevertheless, Romero delivered exceptional displays as Spurs broke their 17-year trophy drought by capturing the Europa League crown in May. The South American star earned Player of the Match honors in the final and subsequently received the tournament's Player of the Season award.

The strong bond between Romero and Ange Postecoglou, who appointed him as deputy captain in 2023, led to widespread rumors about his potential departure when Spurs decided to release the Australian manager in June. While Atlético Madrid showed initial interest, it eventually cooled, and Thomas Frank indicated during the summer that the defender was "excited" about the upcoming 2025–26 campaign.

During preseason preparations, it became evident that Romero would stay at the club for Frank's inaugural season as manager, and expectations of a contract renewal grew when the 27-year-old was announced as Spurs' new skipper the previous week.

Romero found the net in last Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup and captained his team in Saturday's Premier League season opener against Burnley, helping secure a shutout victory. On Monday, Spurs officially confirmed that their captain has pledged his long-term commitment to the Europa League champions, with multiple sources indicating his new agreement extends through the summer of 2029.

The organization also revealed a contract extension for Djed Spence earlier today following his excellent 2025 form, while Rodrigo Bentancur is anticipated to finalize his own renewal before his current terms expire next summer.

Fans are now eagerly hoping to witness Eberechi Eze donning the Lilywhite jersey.
