Through some clever financial maneuvering, Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement to bring Manchester City attacker Omar Marmoush to the club.
Spurs recently wrapped up a deal for Marmoush's former Man City teammate Sávio, who arrived for a fee of $102 million (£75 million) with an additional $13.6 million (£10 million) in potential add-ons.
It has been a summer of sweeping changes for the Lilywhites following a near-relegation battle last season, with Roberto De Zerbi receiving substantial squad reinforcements. Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke have all arrived for hefty fees alongside Sávio, while Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dúbravka have all come in on free transfers.
BBC Sport have confirmed that Marmoush will shortly join the wave of new arrivals at N17, with the Egyptian providing a much-needed boost to a thin and injury-ravaged attack that failed to score in Tottenham's opening 3–0 Premier League loss to Brentford last weekend.
Tottenham Find Marmoush Solution to Offset Summer Spend
Spurs have struck an advantageous agreement with City to land Marmoush, initially bringing the 27-year-old in on a season-long loan. They will then be required to pay $81.7 million (£60 million) for a permanent transfer next summer.
With Tottenham having already committed $413.8 million in transfer spending this summer following the completion of the Sávio deal, deferring the cost of Marmoush's fee will undoubtedly assist them in adhering to the Premier League's Squad Cost Ratio regulations.
Those financial rules cap spending for top-flight English clubs at 85 per cent of their football-related income combined with player sale proceeds.
Spurs invested heavily in Tonali ($133.8 million), Fernandes ($113.7 million) and Van Hecke ($69.6 million) before adding Sávio, though they have recovered some funds through outgoing transfers.
Defenders Luka Vušković ($61.7 million), Cristian Romero ($46.3 million) and Djed Spence ($34.6 million) have all contributed to this summer's financial balance through their departures, while just over $40 million has been generated from selling academy players.
What Will Marmoush Offer Tottenham?
After netting 16 goals in 62 appearances for City and spending much of his time as Erling Haaland's backup, there is still an element of uncertainty surrounding Marmoush's move to London. Just 37 of those appearances came in the Premier League, during which he scored 10 goals.
Nevertheless, a primary factor driving Tottenham's pursuit is his adaptability. Marmoush has extensive experience operating as a left winger throughout his career, but was transformed into a centre-forward at Eintracht Frankfurt and has also been used as a No.9 at the Etihad Stadium.
Spurs are currently short of attacking options. In the recent defeat against Brentford, De Zerbi was left with little choice but to start a front three of Mikey Moore, Richarlison and Mathys Tel. At present, Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert, Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons are all nursing injuries on the sidelines.
Marmoush undoubtedly represents an improvement on Tottenham's existing options, addressing some of their attacking concerns with his versatility and eye for goal. Whether he ultimately proves worth the investment is yet to be determined.
