Tottenham Sabotage Arsenal's Pursuit of Their 'Top Midfield Target'

Tottenham Hotspur have rarely managed to get the better of their bitter north London rivals in recent memory, yet it appears they may have inadvertently derailed Arsenal's pursuit of primary midfield target Bruno Guimarães.

After suffering consecutive 17th-place finishes and narrowly avoiding relegation to the EFL Championship last season, the hierarchy at Spurs is determined to see the Lilywhites climb the Premier League standings during Roberto De Zerbi's first complete campaign in charge.

Spurs were anticipated to be active in the market, but few predicted the scale of expenditure they would undertake at the very outset of the summer transfer window. Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dúbravka arrived on free transfers, while £52 million ($69.5 million) was invested in Brighton & Hove Albion's Jan Paul van Hecke, who had been heading into the final year of his deal on the south coast.

Spurs then proceeded to dramatically reshape the midfield market. Compelled to pay above the odds given their recent domestic struggles, the club have committed a combined £185 million ($247 million) to sign Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, with nearly the entire sum guaranteed.

The staggering £100 million ($134 million) fee for the latter makes it highly improbable that Newcastle United will also sanction the departure of Tonali's more polished and technically gifted midfield partner — a player Arsenal hold in high regard — ahead of the upcoming season.

Newcastle Have No Intention of Selling Bruno Guimarães

Arsenal were also reportedly in contention for Tonali, but the Premier League champions were unwilling to commit the financial resources required to complete a deal.

As a result, the Gunners shifted their attention to Guimarães and have already seen a £55 million ($73 million) offer turned down by the Magpies.

While reports indicate the Brazilian, currently impressing at the World Cup, could be tempted by a move, Newcastle have made it clear to the midfielder and those around him that they have no plans to sell.

Discussing the matter on YouTube, Fabrizio Romano said: "He's always been a player appreciated by [Mikel] Arteta, but now with Newcastle, it's not going to be an easy one at all because Newcastle again made money with [Anthony] Gordon, made money with [Sandro] Tonali, and they already told Bruno Guimarães and they told people close to him that they want to keep the player.

"So, it's not going to be easy at all for Arsenal to get it done," he added.

Romano describes Guimarães as the Gunners' "top target in midfield" and hints that a fresh bid could follow. For the time being, however, Newcastle have firmly shut the door on any potential exit.

Had Spurs not presented Newcastle with an offer too lucrative to turn down for Tonali, the Magpies would likely have been far more open to parting with the 28-year-old Guimarães.

Why are Arsenal Targeting Midfielders in Summer Transfer Window?

Mikel Arteta, Martin Ødegaard

Arsenal had been widely expected to focus on attacking reinforcements this summer, with fans eager for an upgrade on the left flank, despite the Gunners finally securing their first Premier League title in 22 years last season.

There remains a possibility that Arsenal make a significant move in that area, with Morgan Rogers and Bradley Barcola among the names being linked.

Nevertheless, Arteta also believes further strengthening is needed in midfield. Christian Nørgaard is set to depart after just one year in north London, leaving room for at least one new addition to the engine room.

Ultimately, the Spaniard could not depend on Nørgaard to adequately cover for either Martín Zubimendi or Declan Rice, leaving the pair to shoulder a heavy workload. Bringing in someone of Guimarães' calibre — arguably among the finest midfielders on the planet — would allow Arteta to more readily give Rice, in particular, some much-needed rest.

The Brazilian favours a No. 8 role but is adaptable enough to excel at the base of midfield. His relentless work rate and combative nature are complemented by an exceptional understanding of the game in possession, with Guimarães a vibrant and dynamic presence who excels at breaking through defensive pressure.

He would represent a remarkable transfer coup for Arsenal, but Newcastle's firm stance will likely push the Gunners toward alternative options. With the market now significantly inflated by Spurs' activity, the Premier League champions may be forced to spend beyond their preferred budget to strengthen their midfield.
