Tuchel Praises Guehi's Brilliant Bounce-Back After Liverpool Transfer Heartbreak

England boss Thomas Tuchel has praised Marc Guéhi's exemplary attitude following the Crystal Palace centre-back's collapsed Liverpool move during the final hours of the transfer window.

Guéhi was on the verge of departing Selhurst Park for the current Premier League title holders in the closing moments of the summer window, having successfully completed his medical examination with Liverpool before Palace withdrew from the agreement.

The South London outfit couldn't secure a suitable replacement in time and chose to retain Guéhi's services. This decision may ultimately backfire for the club, given that the defender will become a free agent next summer.

The 25-year-old was reportedly incensed by Palace's decision to block his move, but Tuchel has commended Guéhi's professionalism and demeanor during a challenging situation.

"This exemplifies how the players conducted themselves throughout this camp," the German tactician commented following England's commanding 5-0 victory against Serbia, where Guéhi netted his maiden senior international strike. "They prioritized the team over personal matters.

"He demonstrated exceptional team spirit and delivered an outstanding display. Incredibly solid for Crystal Palace and proved his worth on the field today."

Guéhi, who also provided an assist and maintained a clean sheet in the comprehensive defeat of Serbia, avoided discussing transfer speculation post-match and was naturally thrilled about scoring his first England goal.

"I'm absolutely ecstatic," declared the Palace defender. "It's an incredible sensation. You dedicate so much effort throughout your development, so finding the net for your nation is unmatched.

"The experience has been wonderful. It's always seamless joining this squad, such talented players and excellent coaching staff. We're all united in pursuing the same objective."

England's triumph in Belgrade preserved their flawless streak after five fixtures in Group K of 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification, simultaneously extending their advantage to seven points over second-place Albania.

Guéhi will rejoin Palace responsibilities on Saturday when the Eagles welcome Sunderland in Premier League action.
