Türkiye Arrives at the 2026 World Cup Ready to Prove They Mean Business

Türkiye's World Cup history is among the most unusual in global football.

Before securing their spot at 2026 by defeating Kosovo in the UEFA playoffs, the Crescent-Stars had made just two prior appearances: 1954 and a remarkable third-place finish in 2002.

That campaign in Japan and South Korea had the world wondering whether a new football superpower had emerged—only for Türkiye to disappear from the international scene shortly after.

This time around, though, the squad is far more than a collection of surprise performers. Boasting a blend of seasoned veterans and two electrifying young talents (more on those later), Vincenzo Montella's side appears poised to turn heads in North America—particularly with a favorable group that includes the United States, Paraguay and Australia.

The Road to the World Cup

Türkiye's qualifying campaign was stronger than the numbers alone suggest. The team suffered just one defeat in Group E—a heavy 6–0 home loss to Spain—but bounced back with a draw in the return leg and claimed victory in all four remaining matches, beating Georgia and Bulgaria twice each, to finish second in the group.

The playoff rounds were similarly comfortable despite the slim margins. Back-to-back 1–0 victories over Romania and Kosovo understated Türkiye's dominance in both ties, with only a lack of sharpness in front of goal keeping the scores close—an area that will need addressing before the tournament begins.

Manager: Vincenzo Montella

Vincenzo Montella

Brought in during September 2023, the Türkiye role represents Vincenzo Montella's first stint as a national team head coach, following a career predominantly spent managing club sides in Italy, including AC Milan, Fiorentina and Sampdoria.

He has adapted to the position brilliantly, recording victories in nearly 60% of his matches while demonstrating considerable tactical versatility.

In addition to steering Türkiye to its first World Cup in 24 years, Montella has also guided the side to promotion in UEFA Nations League A.

How Türkiye Plays

Montella's Türkiye operates in a hybrid style that reflects the nature of its squad.

Typically set up in a 4-2-3-1, the team combines the creativity of its dynamic young attackers with solid, experienced defensive organization. Out of possession, Türkiye is disciplined and industrious, with every player prepared to track back and help defensively when needed.

In possession, however, the team transforms entirely. With Hakan Çalhanoğlu pulling the strings from midfield, Montella's side is adept at controlling the ball, building patiently through congested areas before exploiting the right opportunity.

Those opportunities frequently arrive through the team's two gifted young playmakers—Kenan Yıldız and Arda Güler—whose ingenuity and unpredictability make them Türkiye's genuine match-winners.

Ones to Watch

Arda Guler and Baris Alper Yilmaz.

X-Factor: At only 21 years old, Arda Güler is already the focal point of Türkiye's attack. Whether operating centrally or from the flank, he can produce moments of brilliance in an instant—bending shots into the top corner or delivering incisive passes that cut through even the most organized defenses.

Breakout Star: Look up the dictionary definition of under the radar and Barış Alper Yılmaz will be front and center. If his energetic club performances translate to the international stage, expect his profile to rise rapidly.

What Türkiye Will Be Wearing

Türkiye's World Cup home and away jerseys.

A marble-inspired aesthetic takes center stage on Türkiye's 2026 home kit, highlighted by an oversized, centrally positioned national flag and Nike badge. The away strip opts for a cleaner look, with a white base, gold detailing and a red chest band that incorporates the same understated marble motif.

Türkiye's Predicted Starting XI

Türkiye's predicted 2026 World Cup starting XI.

Montella may make occasional adjustments, but his preferred lineup has remained largely consistent in recent months.

Uğurcan Çakır is the clear first-choice goalkeeper, while in defense, the experienced Merih Demiral is expected to form a partnership with Abdülkerim Bardakcı—though Ozan Kabak offers a capable alternative. Çalhanoğlu orchestrates play, typically alongside the tenacious İsmail Yüksek—a complementary pairing in the engine room.

The front third is where the real excitement lies. Güler and Yıldız, two of the most talented young attackers in world football, provide the creativity and are capable of producing match-defining moments at any given time. Up front, Kerem Aktürkoğlu is the likely starter. While a reliable option, he is not a natural center-forward. The No. 9 position remains Türkiye's most glaring weakness—a world-class striker could elevate this team to an entirely different level.

Current Form

As noted, Türkiye's March playoff results—two 1–0 victories—looked tighter than they actually were. A glance at the shots on target data tells the story. Just two from 16 attempts against Romania, and three from 12 against Kosovo. In short, Montella's men simply couldn't find their shooting boots.

Defensively, however, the performances were solid. Two clean sheets and only two shots on target conceded across both matches. Türkiye kept threats well away from their own goal—a quality that will stand them in good stead when the tournament gets underway.

What We Can Expect From Türkiye Fans

Turkey fans

Türkiye's club football supporters are famously fervent, and that intensity extends to the national team as well.

Following their qualification for this summer's competition, thousands poured into the streets of Istanbul and cities throughout the country—waving flags, setting off flares, singing at the top of their lungs and honking car horns in jubilation.

That same vibrant atmosphere will undoubtedly travel to North America, with Turkish supporters expected to bring noise, color and plenty of face paint to the stadiums.

National Expectations

Arda Guler

Given the group draw and the talent available—particularly Çalhanoğlu, Güler and Yıldız—Türkiye supporters would consider it a disappointment if the team failed to advance to the knockout rounds, let alone top the group.

In reality, many will be dreaming of a deeper run. That said, following such a lengthy absence from the World Cup, limited experience on the grandest stage means nothing can be taken for granted.
