Barcelona sporting director Deco has disclosed the two primary reasons why the club chose not to pursue Bernardo Silva during the summer transfer window.
The 32-year-old left Manchester City as a free agent following nine years of outstanding service, with Camp Nou widely considered his most probable next destination. However, despite reported interest from both Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, he ultimately signed for their rivals Real Madrid.
Deco confirmed that Barça had held talks with the Portuguese international regarding a potential transfer, but the player's wage expectations created a significant obstacle in negotiations, alongside the fact that La Blaugrana were not seeking a player of Silva's particular profile.
"It wasn't the position we were looking for, given his profile," Deco told MARCA. "He's a tremendous player who represents my national team. He's been among the finest in the world in recent years, but the position simply wasn't what we needed."
"We heard he was keen to join, and given his quality, he would always have been a valuable addition. But ultimately things fell through because we can't exceed our initial parameters. If you want to come, those are the terms. We don't promise a player guaranteed playing time."
Barcelona Justified in Prioritizing Rodri Deal
Barcelona's choice to step away from a deal for Silva was ultimately validated by their successful pursuit of Rodri, who had been heavily linked with Real Madrid before making his move to Catalonia.
"Initially we thought he wouldn't leave City, that it seemed impossible," Deco added when asked about signing the World Cup winner. "The moment we learned he might be available, the first thing we did was contact the sporting director to verify the information."
"He informed me that they had offered him a contract extension, but that if he chose to leave, it would be hard to prevent him given his standing at the club. The manager gave us the green light and we got to work."
Spending $88 million on an injury-prone 30-year-old is rarely considered sound transfer business, but Barça were more than prepared to invest that figure in Rodri given the exceptional quality he brings.
Hansi Flick already had an impressive array of midfield options, but Rodri provides something distinct in the No. 6 role. The Spaniard's composure, determination and defensive awareness will undoubtedly strengthen Barça, particularly during Frenkie de Jong's absence through injury.
Rodri makes an already formidable squad even more dangerous and could prove pivotal in the club realizing their ultimate goal this season: claiming the Champions League title for the first time since 2015.
