Tyler Adams Blazes Into USMNT Legend With Stunning Premier League Strike
Tyler Adams netted the second-longest Premier League strike ever recorded by a U.S. men's national team player during Bournemouth's 3–2 defeat against Sunderland.
Saturday's match featured two of this season's most compelling narratives meeting at the Stadium of Light. The Cherries appeared destined for a significant away triumph after netting twice within 15 minutes. The Black Cats ultimately fought back to maintain their European qualification position, though Adams still etched his name in the record books during the encounter.
The USMNT central midfielder found the net with Bournemouth's second strike in the opening period, delivering a spectacular long-distance effort in the 15th minute. Bournemouth cleared a Sunderland set piece as heavy rain fell across Wearside. A crucial mistake allowed Adams to begin what appeared to be a counter-attacking move, though he had different plans entirely.
Adams, positioned right at the halfway line's edge, spotted Sunderland keeper Robin Roefs positioned too far forward and delivered a perfectly judged strike. The effort was recorded at an incredible 47.4 yards—marking the second-longest distance achieved by a USMNT player in England's premier division. His strike also surpassed Tottenham Hotspur's Richarlison, who found the net from 38.6 yards in the north London derby the previous weekend.
The Longest Goal Scored by a USMNT Player in Premier League History
Adams's strike represents the longest-range effort in the English top flight for over twelve months since Moisés Caicedo scored from 55.2 yards, coincidentally against Bournemouth. However, Adams fell well short of the overall record.
Former Everton shot-stopper Tim Howard maintains the record for the longest goal by a USMNT player at 100.8 yards.
Howard found the net from within his own eighteen-yard box on Jan. 4, 2012 versus Bolton Wanderers at Goodison Park. The American keeper launched a clearance from a back pass and accidentally produced one of the Premier League's longest-ever goals. An unusual bounce coupled with strong winds carried the ball over Bolton's Adam Bogdan.
Remarkably, that doesn't even represent the Premier League's longest goal.
Asmir Begović, previously of Chelsea, owns the record with a 101-yard effort while playing for Stoke City in 2013.
At minimum, Adams can claim the record for longest outfield USMNT player strike. Additionally, his goal against Sunderland could well remain this season's longest effort.
