UEFA Super Cup Explained: Everything You Need To Know Ahead Of The 2026 Showdown

The first piece of European silverware in the 2026–27 season is on the line on Wednesday, Aug. 12.

Most domestic leagues across the continent have yet to begin, and the current UEFA competitions—the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League—remain in their early qualifying rounds. Nevertheless, a trophy is already at stake in Salzburg, Austria, where Paris Saint-Germain take on Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup.

The competition, now in its 51st edition, traditionally serves as the curtain-raiser for the European season, and PSG are aiming to become the first club to successfully defend the title in nearly ten years.

But what exactly is the UEFA Super Cup? And why does the 2026 edition feature PSG and Villa?

History of the UEFA Super Cup

The UEFA Super Cup was officially launched in 1973 and brings together the winners of UEFA's two premier competitions. Originally, it matched the European Cup champions against the European Cup Winners' Cup holders.

The tie was previously played over two legs, but this format was replaced by a single-match final in 1997.

Anton Witkamp, a Dutch journalist for De Telegraaf, conceived the idea as "something new" to challenge the dominance of Ajax, the Dutch powerhouse that claimed three consecutive European Cups in the 1970s.

"Who was the strongest team in Europe, which team ought to have been the strongest?" Witkamp pondered. "The team that won the European Cup? In principle, yes. Yet football is often a hymn to relativity and, for this reason, can be an imprecise art. So why not pit the holders of the European Champion Clubs' Cup against the winners of the Cup Winners' Cup? Why not throw down a challenge to Ajax?"

Today, the previous season's Champions League and Europa League winners clash in the final. In 2026, that means PSG, who claimed the former, face Villa, who lifted the latter.

From 1998 to 2012, Monaco's Stade Louis II served as the regular host venue, but the Super Cup has since rotated across different European cities. The Red Bull Arena, home ground of RB Salzburg, will host the upcoming fixture.

Past Winners of the UEFA Super Cup

Unsurprisingly, record 15-time European champions Real Madrid are also the most decorated side in UEFA Super Cup history. They have appeared in the final nine times in total—with many of their European Cup triumphs predating the competition's creation—and have claimed six victories.

Their Clásico rivals Barcelona are close behind with five victories, though their last triumph dates back to 2015. Italian giants AC Milan have also won the competition five times, but not since defeating Sevilla in 2007.

Liverpool are England's most successful side in the competition, with four wins spanning from 1977 to 2019. Chelsea are the only other English club to have won the Super Cup more than once, triumphing in 1998 and 2021. Both Manchester clubs have each won it once, though Man Utd have also suffered three final defeats.

Despite never having won the Champions League, Atlético Madrid boast three Super Cup titles as Europa League champions. Bayern Munich, by contrast, have won it just twice, alongside the likes of Ajax, Anderlecht, Juventus and Valencia.

Several prominent clubs have won the competition only once, including reigning holders PSG. Their upcoming opponents Aston Villa also have a title to their name, won back in 1982, while Porto, Lazio and Sevilla have also lifted the trophy at various points—the latter winning just one of seven appearances.
