Unstoppable Mbappe Leads France's Charge Into Semifinals With Dazzling Display Against Morocco

France swept Morocco aside on Thursday afternoon, claiming a commanding 2–0 victory to become the first team through to the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup.

The 2022 runners-up overwhelmed a Morocco side that appeared overly defensive from the outset, visibly overawed by the firepower of Les Bleus' attack. Nevertheless, Didier Deschamps's men squandered several clear-cut opportunities, including a Kylian Mbappé penalty miss. Remarkably, the scoreline remained level at halftime.

France's dominance continued after the restart and eventually, Mbappé made amends with a stunning opener just past the hour mark to set his side on course. Ousmane Dembélé then added a second six minutes later with a well-struck effort, and the contest was effectively over in a flash.

It took France some time to convert its superiority into goals, but it was yet another commanding display from a truly exceptional team. France now stand just 90 minutes from a third straight World Cup final, with a semifinal clash against Belgium or Spain in Dallas on Tuesday awaiting them.

Villain Turned Hero

Kylian Mbappé celebrating.

One of the standout figures of the 2026 World Cup was once again the central character in the quarterfinal showdown at Gillette Stadium. Mbappé endured a turbulent afternoon, but ultimately proved to be the decisive force once more.

The Real Madrid forward was active early and frequently, looking dangerous from the first whistle as he has been throughout the tournament. During one of France's early counter-attacks, Mbappé drove into the box, took a touch to compose himself, and used his extraordinary burst of pace to leave Noussair Mazraoui behind with a dazzling step-over. The Manchester United defender then lunged in as a last resort to halt the Frenchman, failing to connect with the ball and catching his leg instead, resulting in a penalty.

The typically composed Mbappé was subjected to a prolonged VAR review. Whether the extended wait unsettled him remains unclear, but he went on to produce a tame, poorly directed effort that Yassine Bounou gathered comfortably without conceding a rebound. One of the most poorly executed penalties of Mbappé's career meant France failed to take the lead.

Morocco was consequently able to maintain its original strategy of sitting in a seemingly unbreakable low block. France struggled to find a way through and frustration mounted as the clock ticked on. Then, Mbappé appeared to finally crack the stubborn Morocco defense.

Mbappé collected the ball near the edge of the area and, with four defenders closing in, curled an absolutely magnificent shot into the far corner to register his eighth goal of the 2026 World Cup—drawing level with Lionel Messi at the top of the Golden Boot standings.

A match that had been increasingly frustrating for France was unlocked by yet another moment of Mbappé brilliance, atoning for his earlier penalty miss in the process. Morocco was forced to abandon its defensive shape in search of an equalizer, opening up space that Les Bleus exploited to double their advantage shortly after.

France Player Ratings vs. Morocco (4-2-3-1)

French crush of players.

*Ratings Provided by FotMob*

GK: Mike Maignan—7.5: Largely a spectator for most of the afternoon. Didn't face a single shot on target until the 82nd minute.

RB: Jules Koundé—7.5: Quietly and efficiently went about his business protecting France's right side. Solid defensively without a single misplaced pass throughout the match.

CB: Dayot Upamecano—7.4: Missed a straightforward header inside the six-yard box that he'll want to forget. He handled his defensive duties well overall, though not without the occasional nervy moment, as tends to be the case with him.

CB: William Saliba—7.3: Barely had to exert himself given Morocco's virtually non-existent attacking presence.

LB: Lucas Digne—7.7: Did an excellent job containing the most threatening side of Morocco's attack, spearheaded by Brahim Díaz and Achraf Hakimi. Was denied a spectacular long-range goal by the crossbar late in the first half.

CM: Manu Koné—7.5: Opted for the safe pass in possession but covered enormous ground tirelessly and regularly won the ball back near the halfway line to allow Les Bleus to build play inside Morocco's half.

CM: Adrien Rabiot—7.7: Crucial to France's pressing game—most notably winning a header to initiate the move that led to Mbappé's opener. Consistently pushed forward and, like his midfield partner, helped his side establish possession in Morocco's half.

RW: Ousmane Dembélé—8.3: Kept relatively quiet for much of the game before bursting into life late on. The first time he received the ball centrally with room to operate, he converted it into his fifth goal of the tournament.

AM: Michael Olise—7.8: Produced a few sharp bursts where he either escaped defenders to set up a teammate or drove transitions—including the one that created Mbappé's penalty. However, there were extended spells where the ball rarely reached him due to tight marking from Morocco's defenders.

LW: Désiré Doué—8.4: A persistent danger whenever given room to operate. Doué also timed a couple of tackles perfectly to regain possession, one of which sparked the move leading to Mbappé's penalty and another resulting in a brilliant run that nearly saw him open the scoring had his finish been more precise.

ST: Kylian Mbappé—8.2: A breathtaking step-over to win a penalty, which he then squandered with an uncharacteristically poor strike. He redeemed himself with a stunning goal to spark the victory. His fitness will be closely watched after he departed the pitch with an ankle knock.

SUB: Warren Zaïre-Emery (71' for Koné)—6.2: Focused on retaining possession. Nothing of note occurred during his short appearance.

SUB: Bradley Barcola (77' for Doué)—6.7: Posed a consistent threat after coming on down the right flank, though his final-third decision-making left something to be desired.

SUB: Jean-Philippe Mateta (77' for Mbappé)—6.1: Had a handful of opportunities to extend France's lead but lacked the composure to finish.

SUB: Malo Gusto (87' for Koundé)—N/A

Subs not used: Brice Samba (GK), Robin Risser (GK), Ibrahima Konaté, Lucas Hernández, Maxence Lacroix, Theo Hernández, Aurélien Tchouaméni, N'Golo Kanté, Maghnes Akliouche, Marcus Thuram.
