Lionel Messi may not have found the net in Argentina's World Cup quarterfinal triumph over Switzerland on Saturday, but he still etched his name in the record books—claiming the title of the tournament's all-time leading assist provider.
The 39-year-old delivered an in-swinging corner to set up Alexis Mac Allister's opening goal in the 3–1 victory, registering his 10th assist across World Cup appearances.
That figure puts the Argentina skipper ahead of West Germany legend Fritz Walter, who tallied nine. Brazilian icon Pelé is also credited with nine assists by certain sources, though his exact total remains a matter of debate.
Remarkably, every one of Messi's assists has been converted by a different goalscorer.
Messi Milestones

The Kansas City clash was yet another nerve-shredding knockout encounter for Argentina, with Lionel Scaloni's squad having previously scraped through against Cabo Verde and Egypt to make the quarterfinals.
Messi's assist for Mac Allister broke the deadlock inside 10 minutes, but Switzerland hit back to equalize through Dan Ndoye in the second half. A contentious second yellow card for Breel Embolo—stemming from FIFA's new "mistaken identity" rule—reduced the European side to ten men for the remainder of the game. Argentina still needed extra time to seal the win, eventually edging ahead through Julían Alvarez's stunning strike before Lautaro Martínez wrapped things up late in the contest.
Argentina's victory sets up a semifinal showdown with England on Wednesday, July 15.
It was the first match of this World Cup in which Messi failed to score for Argentina, leaving his Golden Boot tally stuck at eight goals. Nevertheless, it was far from a quiet night for the Inter Miami star, who still created the most chances in the match (six), attempted the most shots (four), and completed the most dribbles (five)—on top of delivering a key assist.
"He's like a machine," Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni said of Messi following the final whistle. "Those who don't know him well might be surprised, and at 39 some people might assume he can no longer rise to the occasion. But I've said it before—as long as he wants to be the best, and I'm not saying this just because I coach him, but because if he chooses to keep going, he will remain the best."
Beyond claiming the outright World Cup assist record, Messi also hit another landmark on Saturday by bringing his total goal involvements in this tournament to 10 (eight goals, two assists).
Having also surpassed double digits for goal contributions at the 2022 edition, he becomes only the second player—after France's Kylian Mbappé—to record 10 or more combined goals and assists across back-to-back World Cup tournaments.
World Cup All-Time Assist Providers

With 10 World Cup assists to his name, Messi becomes the first player ever to reach double figures for setting up goals at the tournament.
Compiling assist statistics from past tournaments is more complex than it might seem. A comprehensive record of assist providers from every World Cup dating back to the first competition in 1930 simply does not exist, with data from the early editions through to the 1970s hampered by limited archival footage. There is also the question of what qualifies as an assist, with historical definitions differing considerably from today's standards. Consequently, some sources attribute 10 assists to Pelé, while others put his figure as low as six.
That said, West Germany captain and 1954 World Cup champion Walter's total of nine is largely accepted and officially recognized by FIFA.
Opta, has compiled an assist leaderboard stretching back to 1966 to offer a modern-era perspective. Within that timeframe, Messi had already topped the charts before the Switzerland game—ahead of fellow Argentine Diego Maradona on eight.
