At the start of each new year, people tend to make resolutions—typically involving things like drinking less, hitting the gym more frequently, or putting money aside for a holiday.
For footballers, particularly strikers, however, the goal remains constant: find the back of the net as often as possible.
Some manage to hit their targets, others fall short, and a select few exceed all expectations—none more dramatically than the players who smashed records with jaw-dropping goal tallies.
Here, we examine the players who have netted the most goals in a single calendar year throughout soccer history.
Most Goals in a Calendar Year: Lionel Messi's Record

As is so often the case with football records, it is Lionel Messi who holds the standard for the most goals scored in a single calendar year.
In 2012, he delivered a stunning 91 goals across FC Barcelona (79) and Argentina (12). The iconic Argentine made just 69 appearances that year, averaging a goal every 66 minutes on the pitch. Messi registered as many multi-goal games as he did goalless outings (22).
Unsurprisingly, those remarkable numbers secured the then-25-year-old the Ballon d'Or (which was awarded based on calendar-year performance rather than the current seasonal format), though ironically, despite his historic goal haul, Barcelona finished the year with only the Copa del Rey, falling short in La Liga, the Supercopa de España, and the Champions League.
Other Highest Goalscoring Calendar Years in Soccer History

Messi's record-setting 91 goals in 2012 eclipsed the previous mark established by Gerd Müller in 1972, when the German forward netted 85 goals combined for Bayern Munich and West Germany.
It is also worth noting that in the same year as Müller's tally, the Football Association of Zambia claimed that Godfrey Chitalu surpassed 100 goals for Kabwe Warriors and Zambia. However, FIFA stated it was unable to officially verify the figure due to insufficient historical records and data from that period, meaning the total remains unrecognized in the official record books.
Elsewhere, Pelé ranks third on the all-time list with 75 goals, while fellow Brazilian greats Zico and Romário both appear with 72 goals apiece.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski, and Kylian Mbappé round out the modern elite group, while Viktor Gyökeres' 62-goal haul for Sporting CP and Sweden in 2024 just misses the top tier.
