The United States and Canada share a storied rivalry across nearly every sport, but their men's national teams could be headed toward a historic World Cup knockout stage collision for the very first time this summer.
The USMNT kicked off the 2026 World Cup at SoFi Stadium with a commanding 4–1 victory over Paraguay on Friday night, just hours after Canada had battled back to secure the nation's first-ever men's World Cup point in a 1–1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto.
Saturday brought further intrigue for both sides. In Group D, Australia defeated Türkiye 2–0 in Vancouver, drawing level on points with the USMNT ahead of their clash with the co-hosts in the second round of fixtures. Meanwhile, Group B witnessed Qatar earn a stunning point against the heavily favored Swiss.
For the USMNT, upcoming matches against Australia and Türkiye carry even greater weight. Canada, meanwhile, hosts Qatar and Switzerland in Vancouver but sits level on one point, following a 1–1 draw against each team in Group B.
While numerous scenarios remain in play, the opening results have potentially set the stage for these Concacaf rivals to meet in the round of 32, which would take place in Santa Clara, Calif. on Canada Day, July 1.
How Could the USMNT and Canada Meet?

The USMNT would need to top Group D to have any chance of facing their northern rivals. Canada, on the other hand, would need to finish third in Group B—a realistic possibility given the four-way, one-point deadlock in the group and the opponents still to come.
Eight of the 12 best third-place finishers from the group stage advance to the round of 32, though their opponents in that round are only determined once the group stage wraps up. There are 495 different combinations of qualifiers (teams from Groups A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H could advance, or perhaps A, B, C, D, E, F, G and I, and so on), each producing a unique set of knockout matchups.
Every possible outcome has already been catalogued by FIFA, and two-thirds of those combinations pit the Group D winner—potentially the USMNT—against the third-place team from Canada's Group B.
There is also a scenario where Canada could be sent to Foxborough, Mass. to face the winner of Group E, most likely Germany.
Should Canada win Group B, they would remain in Vancouver and take on one of the third-place finishers from Groups E, F, G, I or J, with the winner of that tie also set to play in Vancouver in the round of 16. Topping the group is therefore crucial to Canada's ambitions of maximizing home games and potentially advancing to the quarterfinals.

Who Would Be Favored in a USMNT vs. Canada Showdown?

A potential USMNT–Canada encounter would likely be a tightly contested affair, with both teams having already been put through their paces in the group stage. Since 2019, Canada has beaten the USMNT four times compared to just three victories for the Americans, with two draws also on the books—including the USMNT's penalty shootout win in the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2023.
Most recently, Canada defeated the USMNT at SoFi Stadium in the third-place match of the 2025 Concacaf Nations League, a game that saw Canadian captain and star Alphonso Davies suffer an ACL tear—an injury that, along with other setbacks, has kept him sidelined from Canadian duty since.
Davies is expected to be fit for the round of 32, joining Canadian standout center back Moïse Bombito, while the USMNT would continue to lean on Folarin Balogun and Christian Pulisic.
The matchup would likely be a tight one, with both teams holding genuine belief in their ability to advance. That said, there is still a great deal of football to be played before such a clash becomes a reality.
