USMNT, Canada & Mexico Defy the Odds and Shatter Potential World Cup Embarrassment

The opening two days of the 2026 World Cup are now complete, and all three host nations can take pride in avoiding defeat in their first fixtures.

There was enormous pressure on the U.S. men's national team, Canada and Mexico to deliver strong performances in their debut matches on home turf. Throughout World Cup history, only one host nation has lost its opening game—an unwanted distinction held by Qatar, who were beaten by Ecuador four years ago.

This summer's trio of host nations avoided a similar embarrassment. Mexico got the party started with a convincing 2–0 victory over South Africa, claiming its first-ever World Cup opening match win after seven previous attempts ended in failure.

El Tri never appeared in danger of dropping points at the Estadio Azteca, but Canada had a far more difficult time. Jesse Marsch's side fell behind early to Bosnia & Herzegovina, before Cyle Larin came to the rescue in the 78th minute to earn the Reds a share of the spoils from their opener.

The standout display of the opening round, however, came from the USMNT. The Stars and Stripes delivered a commanding 4–1 victory over Paraguay, equaling their biggest-ever winning margin in a World Cup match.

How USMNT, Canada, Mexico's Remaining Group Stage Games Compare

Canada

USMNT (Group D)

Canada (Group B)

Mexico (Group A)

USMNT vs. Australia (June 19)

Canada vs. Qatar (June 18)

Mexico vs. South Korea (June 18)

Türkiye vs. USMNT (June 25)

Switzerland vs. Canada (June 24)

Czechia vs. Mexico (June 24)

The USMNT will likely be riding the highest wave of confidence heading into the group stage. Mauricio Pochettino's next challenge is a clash with Australia, a side they already got the better of 2–1 back in October. Securing three points would almost certainly lock in at least a second-place finish in Group D before their final group game against Türkiye.

Canada, on the other hand, faces considerably greater pressure after managing just a single point in their opener. The silver lining is that Qatar should present a manageable obstacle, giving the host nation a prime opportunity to claim their first-ever World Cup win. Switzerland will be a tougher test, but the anticipated return of Alphonso Davies should provide Canada with a meaningful lift.

Much like the USMNT, Mexico sits comfortably at the top of Group A, though they cannot afford to lose concentration. South Korea is a formidable opponent, having staged a dramatic comeback against Czechia in their opening fixture. Son Heung-min and company also held El Tri to a 2–2 draw back in September.

Should Javier Aguirre's side get past South Korea, they will be on the verge of the knockout stage heading into their final group match against a weaker Czechia outfit.
