USMNT Icon Sparks Debate Over Pulisic's Leadership Role Before Home World Cup

Ex-USMNT legend Alexi Lalas has criticized Christian Pulisic, arguing that the American star isn't the captain the national team "requires or desires" as they approach the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Pulisic has faced scrutiny in recent months regarding his leadership qualities and dedication to the national squad. A series of disappointing displays and outcomes, along with his choice to miss this summer's Gold Cup, has exposed the 26-year-old to significant backlash.

With merely eight months remaining before the USMNT begins its 2026 World Cup journey in Los Angeles, the criticism continues to intensify for Pulisic, who bears the responsibility of leading the host country as captain in the most important tournament of his professional life.

Lalas, an outspoken detractor of the AC Milan attacker, was direct in his assessment of Pulisic's leadership role during the State of the Union podcast.

"I believe that Christian Pulisic isn't the captain this squad requires or desires. The issue is, what other options exist? Who's emerging as an alternative? No one," Lalas stated.

The 55-year-old also referenced Chris Richards, Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams, though he acknowledged these players are "not ready for that role yet."

Lalas: Pulisic As USMNT Captain Is Not 'Beneficial for the Squad'

Christian Pulisic

Pulisic has served as the USMNT's premier talent since his emergence, showcasing abilities that helped launch the Stars and Stripes' "golden generation."

The Pennsylvania-born player currently holds the fifth-highest goal tally in USMNT history, pursuing marks established by Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan. Pulisic also performs for AC Milan and boasts an impressive collection of Serie A and Champions League achievements.

However, Lalas believes that individual excellence shouldn't automatically secure him the USMNT captaincy.

"The idea that your most talented player isn't necessarily suited to be captain is well-established. We've witnessed this repeatedly and it's entirely reasonable. This doesn't question his dedication.

"Frequently, it's not the most skilled player; it's not the individual with the greatest career achievements. It's not even someone who commands attention. Often you must step back and consider, 'What serves the team's best interests,'" Lalas explained.

It may be a while before Pulisic can return and potentially disprove Lalas' assessment; the forward sustained a hamstring problem during October's international matches and AC Milan have allegedly requested that Mauricio Pochettino exclude their star player from November's squad.
