USMNT Rising Star Smashes Transfer Records in Career-Defining Move That Mirrors Pulisic's Breakthrough

American national team midfielder Malik Tillman has completed his move to former German champions Bayer Leverkusen following the activation of his €35 million ($40.9 million) buyout clause from PSV Eindhoven.

The 23-year-old serves as Florian Wirtz's replacement following his record-breaking transfer to Liverpool, making Tillman Leverkusen's costliest signing in history. He also ranks as the second-most expensive USMNT player ever, trailing only Christian Pulisic's £57.6 million ($73 million) move to Chelsea in January 2019.

"We have secured another powerful and highly threatening offensive player," stated Leverkusen's sporting director Simon Rolfes regarding Tillman's acquisition. "His versatility allows him to operate in both central attacking midfield and box-to-box roles. Malik represents an exceptional addition to our squad."

The 23-year-old developed through Bayern Munich's academy system but found limited opportunities with the senior squad, making only seven appearances from 2020 to 2024.

Following a productive loan period at Rangers in 2022–23, Tillman moved to PSV on loan with a purchase option. The Dutch club activated this clause and retained his services across 54 league matches, during which he netted 21 goals and provided 12 assists. In his most recent campaign, he tallied 16 goals and five assists in 34 competitive fixtures, helping PSV secure the championship ahead of traditional rivals Ajax and Feyenoord.

Born in Germany to a German mother and American father, Tillman has committed to Leverkusen until the 2030 season.

Tillman, who boasts 25 international appearances for the USMNT and found the net three times during their Concacaf Gold Cup final run this summer, commented: "This organization has consistently demonstrated exceptional football. Over the past four to five years, Leverkusen has experienced remarkable growth and become appealing to numerous players throughout Europe. My goal is to achieve success.

"That objective drove me in Glasgow and Eindhoven, and it continues to motivate me here."

Leverkusen secured second place behind Bayern in the 2024–25 Bundesliga campaign, having completed an undefeated season the year prior to claim their maiden league title. Xabi Alonso orchestrated that historic achievement for Die Werkself before departing for Real Madrid, with former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag taking over the reins.

For Tillman, this new chapter and increased competition arrive at a pivotal moment, as preparations intensify for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
