In need of a career reset, U.S. men's national team midfielder Gio Reyna is reportedly in discussions to move to Ligue 1 club Strasbourg from Borussia Mönchengladbach.
The 23-year-old saw his profile rise this summer after representing the United States at the 2026 World Cup. Reyna netted a stunning trivela goal in the team's 4–1 victory over Paraguay and received widespread praise from Mauricio Pochettino, who described him as an "amazing talent."
The tournament also helped restore the American's reputation following earlier controversies involving his family and former USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter that had damaged his image—and Strasbourg appear to have taken note.
The Athletic reports the French club is considering a move to acquire Reyna this summer. A transfer would benefit the midfielder, who managed only 20 appearances for Mönchengladbach during the previous campaign.
Should a move to Strasbourg come to fruition, Reyna would be operating under the BlueCo umbrella. The consortium, which also owns Premier League powerhouse Chelsea, is headed by American businessman Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
The Curious Case of Reyna
Reyna was once regarded as one of the most thrilling young talents in the USMNT pipeline. In 2020–21, he registered seven goals and six assists across 46 appearances for Borussia Dortmund as a teenager, lining up alongside Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham.
Fast forward to 2026, and Reyna spent more time warming the bench than playing at Mönchengladbach. The transfer was meant to offer Reyna a fresh chapter following a string of underwhelming seasons at Dortmund and an unsuccessful loan spell at Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
Much of Reyna's downturn stemmed from a series of long-term injuries that derailed his rise, but even when fully fit he struggled to earn regular minutes. Despite signing a three-year deal with Mönchengladbach, the American still couldn't break into the starting lineup last season, logging just 510 Bundesliga minutes and scoring a single goal.
The lack of playing time would affect any player, but it hit Reyna particularly hard, as his form had already become worryingly erratic following his injury troubles. Pochettino still showed faith in him during the World Cup, and Reyna will now hope Strasbourg will do the same.
Why Reyna Keeps Avoiding MLS Return
Perhaps the most straightforward path Reyna could have taken to revitalize his career would have been joining Major League Soccer. The 23-year-old would undoubtedly earn a starting role at most clubs in the league and could command a substantial salary.
Playing in MLS would also give Reyna the opportunity to perform in front of home fans across the United States, further rebuilding his public image following this summer's World Cup run. Additionally, he would likely find it easier to settle into MLS than Ligue 1, given his background in New York City FC's academy.
Yet the appeal of competing in Europe, much like many of his USMNT colleagues, appears too strong for Reyna to resist. If he can make an impact at Strasbourg, he stands a far better chance of eventually earning a move to a top club in Europe's elite leagues than if he were to shine for, say, D.C. United.
An MLS transfer could potentially become an option if Strasbourg ultimately decides against signing Reyna, but only time will tell whether that scenario comes to pass.
