USMNT Star Striker Set for Comeback with Dutch Champions as World Cup Looms

The United States men's national soccer team may receive a significant reinforcement before the 2025–26 European campaign begins, as forward Ricardo Pepi has revealed he is close to making his comeback at PSV following an injury sustained in January.
Although the USMNT utilized a combination of Patrick Agyemang, the former Charlotte FC attacker now with Derby County, and Vancouver Whitecaps FC's Brian White during the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup, Pepi's anticipated return provides them with a more potent attacking option as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 22-year-old Pepi found the net in a thrilling 3–2 victory against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League on January 29, but was forced to exit the match in the 76th minute due to injury. Following meniscus surgery and an extensive rehabilitation period, he aims to be match-ready for the upcoming season's kickoff.
"It feels incredible. I've been anticipating this moment for five months, and now I'm back training with the squad," Pepi shared with ESPN. "I believe I'm very close to full fitness—nearly at 100%—just completing the final stages before my complete return.
"It's natural to feel eager about returning to action, but it's crucial to follow the proper recovery process since you can't hurry an injury. Everything depends on when your body signals it's prepared, and I'm now very near that point and thrilled to begin this season."
This week also saw Pepi change to jersey number 9, inheriting it from Luuk de Jong, who appears destined for Rangers in the Scottish Premier League. Additionally, new forward acquisition Alassane Pléa will adopt Pepi's previous number 14 and create attacking competition within the squad.
"It's an honor. Numerous club legends have donned this number at PSV. I'm embracing the opportunity to create my own legacy," Pepi explained to ESPN. "I believe competition is beneficial. There should always be rivalry for positions. It maintains your focus and elevates your performance."
However, primary attention will center on Pepi's comeback and enhanced responsibilities within the team, as he seeks to improve upon his 16-goal tally across all competitions and help address the leadership gap created by De Jong's departure.
Additionally, he hopes to carry his club form into international duty as the 2026 World Cup approaches, having last featured for the Stars and Stripes on November 18, 2024, in a 4–2 Concacaf Nations League quarterfinal triumph over Jamaica.
Pepi's earliest possible return to competitive league play would be August 9 against Sparta Rotterdam, when PSV begins their Eredivisie title defense, while his USMNT comeback could occur during the September international break, where manager Mauricio Pochettino's team will meet South Korea and Japan.
