USMNT Star Timothy Weah Set for Ligue 1 Move as Club Strikes Preliminary Deal

Timothy Weah's career trajectory could soon become clearer as the United States men's national team forward looks set to make his way back to France's top division and leave his current club Juventus in Italy's Serie A.

During his stint with Juventus, Weah has netted seven times and provided six assists in 78 matches, contributing to the club's 2023–24 Coppa Italia triumph, though his minimal involvement at the FIFA Club World Cup—where he managed just 45 minutes as a substitute in the group phase encounter with Al Ain—may prompt his exit.

On Sunday, reporter Fabrice Hawkins indicated that the 25-year-old had reached terms on a five-year contract with Marseille, marking his return to Ligue 1 following previous spells with Paris Saint-Germain and Lille prior to his Juventus move, where his current deal runs until 2028.

Both clubs are now engaged in detailed discussions regarding what would initially be a loan arrangement, featuring a mandatory purchase clause for next summer valued at approximately €12 million ($14 million) to €15 million ($17.4 million).

The Marseille connection represents the most recent development for Weah, who had previously come close to joining Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest before the young attacker allegedly turned down that opportunity.

Earlier, he established himself as a standout performer in Ligue 1 with Lille following his PSG experience, playing a crucial role in their unexpected Ligue 1 championship during the 2020–21 campaign, making 107 appearances from 2019 to 2023.

If he completes a move to Marseille, he would be following his father's path, as the legendary Liberian international made 20 appearances for the club after notable stints with PSG, AC Milan and Monaco.

Furthermore, a significant consideration for Weah will certainly be the approaching 2026 FIFA World Cup. Whatever decision he makes now could impact his fitness and match readiness as he aims to capitalize on his 44 USMNT appearances and assume a vital role in next year's competition on American territory.
