When SV Elversberg's small town of just 13,000 residents celebrated their historic first promotion to the Bundesliga last season, nobody could have predicted a moment like Saturday—defeating powerhouse Bayer Leverkusen 3–2, with a promising young American at the center of their finest moments.
Based in the modest town of Spiesen-Elversberg, the club plays at a ground that actually exceeds the local population in capacity: 14,200. Following a meteoric rise through the divisions—Elversberg were competing in the fourth tier as recently as 2022—they made several significant additions this summer to strengthen the squad ahead of their maiden Bundesliga campaign.
Twenty-year-old USMNT prospect and U.S. Youth National Team standout Cole Campbell arrived from Borussia Dortmund on a four-year contract and immediately won over his new supporters in Saturday's triumph.
Elversberg found the net for the very first time in Bundesliga history in the eighth minute through Bulgarian winger Lukas Petkov, who was instrumental in the club's promotion push last season. Campbell then scored his first senior-level goal to push the advantage to 2–0 just a minute later.

With that strike, Campbell became the first American to score in a top-five European league this season, and the goal arrived on a weekend when North Americans shone brightly; Canada's Liam Millar notched his first Premier League goal, Jacen Russell-Rowe scored his maiden Ligue 1 strike, and fellow USMNT hopeful Zavier Gozo made his Premier League debut.
Campbell played 65 minutes in the victory, registering three shots on target and causing constant problems down the left flank, while outshining USMNT World Cup scorer Malik Tillman, who also featured for 65 minutes on the losing side for Bayer Leverkusen.
With the victory secured, the small community can glance at the early Bundesliga standings and find their club alongside other opening-weekend winners, including perennial champions Bayern Munich—undoubtedly placing both the club and the town on the world football stage like never before.
How Elversberg Could Use Campbell This Season
Now in his twenties, Campbell departed Dortmund in search of consistent playing time in a top-flight league, despite valuing his development and early professional experiences with the Black and Yellow and a loan spell at TSG Hoffenheim.
Joining Elversberg, the Houston-born midfielder brought 10 previous Bundesliga appearances along with experience in the Champions League and DFB Pokal, eager to channel that background into a more prominent role.
Now at a club that played a meaningful part in the rise of Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade, there's confidence that Campbell has found the ideal environment to reach the next level, while contributing to the team's ambitious goals.
"I think this year it's even easier because we can offer them to play in the Bundesliga, you know? It was a bit more difficult in the 2. Bundesliga, but this year it's quite easy, you know. We can't offer high wages, but we can really offer a good development pathway for the player," technical director Josef Welzmüller told CBS Sports.
"[Cole] was our record signing, which probably shows how much we believe in Cole. He's a fantastic player. He's very fast. He's very strong with the ball, very strong in one-on-one situations.
"I've spent quite a bit of time with him now, and he's a really good kid with a great character. We just want him to get into one-on-one situations and create space for us. And we are very confident that he will have a breakout season."
With the first goal and first win now in the books, Elversberg will aim to keep writing history next weekend against Borussia Mönchengladbach, which could set up another USMNT showdown, depending on defender Joe Scally's situation in the closing days of the summer transfer window.
