USMNT Stars Who Have Dominated the Champions League Stage the Most

Every soccer player dreams of lifting the World Cup. But perhaps even more prestigious and exclusive—and harder to claim—is the UEFA Champions League.

It represents the absolute peak of technical excellence in the sport and remains the most coveted trophy in club football.

American players were once a rare sight in the competition. But as more members of the U.S. men's national team have secured spots at elite European clubs, Americans appearing in the Champions League has become increasingly familiar—especially over the past decade.

Of the 26 players Mauricio Pochettino named for the 2026 World Cup, 13 had Champions League experience at some stage, while breakout defender Alex Freeman has since joined that group. Several others have also featured in the Europa League at various points in their careers.

Here are the 10 Americans who have accumulated more men's Champions League appearances than anyone else.

10. Yunus Musah (19 matches)

Yunus Musah

Clubs: AC Milan, Atalanta

Yunus Musah is back in favor at AC Milan this season, after losing his footing with the Rossoneri and spending the previous campaign on loan at Atalanta. The Bronx-born midfielder has featured in the Champions League for both clubs, though he won't be adding to his 19-game total this season after Milan's 2025–26 struggles resulted in a Europa League berth instead.

9. Tim Weah (21)

Tim Weah

Clubs: Lille, Juventus, Marseille

Tim Weah never set foot on the pitch in the Champions League during his time at Paris Saint-Germain. However, by 2021 he had made his debut on club soccer's grandest stage with Lille, before going on to compete at Europe's top level for another season with Juventus. Weah was also involved last season with Marseille, though the French club will not be participating in the competition in 2026–27.

8. Ricardo Pepi (21)

Ricardo Pepi

Club: PSV Eindhoven

A 2023 move to PSV from Augsburg thrust Ricardo Pepi into Champions League football, with all of his appearances in the competition coming for the Dutch side. Pepi boasts an impressive scoring record, netting on average once every 3.3 Champions League outings.

7. DaMarcus Beasley (22)

DaMarcus Beasley

Clubs: PSV Eindhoven, Rangers

The 126-cap international became the first American to feature in a Champions League semifinal in 2005, when PSV came agonizingly close to reaching that iconic Istanbul final against Liverpool rather than AC Milan. DaMarcus Beasley had a brief stint at Manchester City before the club's transformative takeover reshaped English football, and he later returned to Champions League action with Rangers during the 2007–08 season.

6. Jermaine Jones (23)

Jermaine Jones

Clubs: Bayer Leverkusen, Schalke 04

Jermaine Jones switched his international allegiance to the USMNT from Germany well before he ever played club soccer on American soil. The midfielder spent the bulk of his career in Europe, making his Champions League debut for Bayer Leverkusen in 2004 before becoming most prominent with Schalke—Jones was out on loan at Blackburn Rovers during 2010–11 when the Bundesliga club made a surprise run to the semifinals.

5. Gio Reyna (27)

Gio Reyna

Club: Borussia Dortmund

Gio Reyna is looking to revive his career at Strasbourg, a club aiming to shake up the established hierarchy in French football. A return to the Champions League will have to wait, but by the age of 22 the attacking midfielder had already racked up 22 appearances for Borussia Dortmund. Reyna had only just turned 17 when he made his debut in the competition back in February 2020.

4. Malik Tillman (31)

Clubs: Bayern Munich, Rangers, PSV Eindhoven, Bayer Leverkusen

The Champions League can sometimes be a more welcoming environment for young talent, and Malik Tillman made two appearances for Bayern Munich in 2021 before even earning his Bundesliga debut. Stints at Rangers and PSV—two clubs that have consistently provided opportunities for American players—followed before a move to Bayer Leverkusen in 2025.

3. Sergiño Dest (35)

Sergino Dest

Clubs: Ajax, Barcelona, AC Milan, PSV Eindhoven

It finally seems like Sergiño Dest is rediscovering his best form. His high-profile 2020 switch to Barcelona during one of the club's most turbulent modern periods arguably arrived too early in his development. Injuries have also hampered the fullback at various stages, but PSV are now reaping the rewards of a player who has built considerable resilience and still has plenty of football ahead of him at just 25. He could be a regular Champions League presence for the next ten years.

2. Weston McKennie (43)

Weston McKennie

Clubs: Schalke 04, Juventus

Since returning from his Leeds United loan in 2023, Weston McKennie has established himself as a key figure in the Juventus midfield. He made his Champions League debut with Schalke, though that amounted to just six appearances nearly a decade ago. Of his 43 outings in the competition, 19 have come in the last two seasons alone. His overall tally of 11 goals is equally impressive for a midfielder. Unfortunately for McKennie, Juventus are absent from Europe's premier club competition this year.

1. Christian Pulisic (63)

Christian Pulisic

Clubs: Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, AC Milan

The American with both the most goals (12) and the most appearances (63) in the Champions League is Christian Pulisic. Yet it feels as though those numbers could have been even greater. Currently focused on reclaiming his spot in Mauricio Pochettino's USMNT setup, he featured 10 times in Europe's elite club competition as an 18-year-old at Borussia Dortmund and has also represented two other Champions League heavyweights: Chelsea and AC Milan.

He made history as the first American to play in a men's Champions League final when Chelsea defeated Manchester City in 2021.
